2D Covalent Organic Framework Membranes for Liquid-Phase Molecular Separations: State of the Field, Common Pitfalls, and Future Opportunities

David W. Burke et al.

Summary: 2D COFs are attractive candidates for next-generation membranes, but the reported performance metrics for their selective molecular transport vary dramatically. There is a lack of consistent relationships between the designed COF pore structure and separation performance, suggesting that these imperfect materials do not sieve molecules through uniform pores. This perspective article describes rigorous practices for evaluating COF membrane structures and separation performance.

Interfacial interactions between polymers and selective adsorbents influence ion transport properties of boron scavenging ion-exchange membranes

Cassidy Carey et al.

Summary: The emergence of adsorptive ion-exchange membranes (IEMs) integrating highly selective porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) with ion-exchange polymers has enabled simultaneous desalination and targeted removal of specific solutes. This study investigated the influence of PAF loading level on PAF-polymer interactions and the properties of the adsorptive IEMs. The study found that the interactions differed between cation-exchange membranes (CEMs) and anion-exchange membranes (AEMs) due to differences in the fixed charge group chemistry. Controlling interfacial interactions is crucial for designing effective adsorptive IEMs for desalination and solute capture.

Defect engineering of porous aromatic frameworks via end capping improves dioxane removal from water

Anna Yang et al.

Summary: This study reports the synthesis of porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) with tailored pore structures by incorporating a mono-functionalized end-capping monomer. The defect engineering strategy leads to less densely crosslinked networks, resulting in pore collapse and the presence of unique adsorption sites. These defect-engineered PAFs exhibit improved removal of the environmental pollutant 1,4-dioxane from water, and increasing the concentration of end-capping monomers enhances their uptake.

Molten Salt Templated Synthesis of Covalent Isocyanurate Frameworks with Tunable Morphology and High CO2 Uptake Capacity

Kyung Seob Song et al.

Summary: The use of reactive molten salts, such as ZnCl2, as soft templates and catalysts in the synthesis of covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) has been explored. By utilizing isocyanate moieties and alkali metal ions, the efficient salt templating of covalent isocyanurate frameworks (CICFs) with high microporosity and nitrogen content was achieved. The ion-dipole interactions between alkali metal cations and oxygen atoms facilitated the formation of purely microporous structures, leading to improved gas adsorption properties.
