Effectiveness of problem-based learning methodology in undergraduate medical education: a scoping review

Joan Carles Trullas et al.

Summary: Problem-based learning (PBL) is an effective and satisfactory methodology for medical education, with higher levels of student satisfaction compared to traditional lecture-based methods. However, there is limited high-quality scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness, and its implementation may be hindered by resource and training requirements.

Measuring the Master Adaptive Learner: Development and Internal Structure Validity Evidence for a New Instrument

J. K. Stringer et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop an instrument for measuring the master adaptive learning (MAL) process in medical students and evaluate its psychometric properties. The findings revealed that the original 67 items were reduced to 28 items that loaded onto four factors: Planning, Learning, Resilience, and Motivation. These findings serve as a starting point for future research to identify and support adaptive learners.

A layered analysis of self-explanation and structured reflection to support clinical reasoning in medical students

Martine Chamberland et al.

Summary: Studies show that self-explanation and structured reflection can effectively support medical students' clinical reasoning development, with a need to maintain core philosophy and adjust techniques during implementation. Educational scholars have yet to clearly articulate the philosophy, principles, and techniques of these interventions, and the layered analysis approach provides essential insights into their underpinnings.
