Diverse partitiviruses hosted by the ectomycorrhizal agaric Hebeloma mesophaeum and the natural transmission of a partitivirus between phylogenetically distant, sympatric fungi

Ilgaz Akata et al.

Summary: We report on the identification and complete genome characterization of three novel partitiviruses naturally infecting the ectomycorrhizal fungus Hebeloma mesophaeum. One of the partitiviruses identified was found to be conspecific with a previously reported partitivirus (LcPV1) described from a saprotrophic fungus Leucocybe candicans. Bio-tracking studies revealed the significant drop in viral loads of LcPV1 in L. candicans but not in H. mesophaeum within four years period, suggesting a potential virus transmission event.

Fungal Viruses Unveiled: A Comprehensive Review of Mycoviruses

Bianca Hough et al.

Summary: Mycoviruses are widespread in the fungal kingdom and are classified into 23 viral families and one genus by the ICTV. Research on mycoviruses has mainly focused on those infecting plant pathogenic fungi, as some have the potential to reduce the virulence of their host and act as biocontrol agents. However, mycoviruses lack extracellular transmission mechanisms and rely on intercellular transmission through hyphal anastomosis, which hinders successful transmission between different fungal strains.

Hybrids of RNA viruses and viroid-like elements replicate in fungi

Marco Forgia et al.

Summary: RNA viruses are remnants of the pre-cellular RNA world, and viroid-like elements are small, circular RNA genomes that encode self-cleaving catalytic RNAs. This study identifies a higher number of candidate viroid-like elements than previously thought and reveals that fungal ambiviruses display hybrid features of viroid-like RNAs and viruses. The discovery of similar circular RNAs in fungal viruses further highlights fungi as an evolutionary hub for RNA viruses and viroid-like elements.

Mycoviruses and their role in fungal pathogenesis

Ioly Kotta-Loizou

Summary: The research focus in mycovirology has expanded to include not only plant pathogenic fungi and hypovirulence mediated by mycovirus, but also insect and human pathogenic fungi and a variety of mycovirus mediated phenotypes such as hypervirulence, control of endophytic traits, regulation of metabolite production and drug resistance. In interactions involving fungus, mycovirus and the environment, environmental factors and both abiotic and biotic factors are crucial in determining whether and how mycovirus mediated phenotypes manifest. Mycovirus infections can lead to changes in the host transcriptome profile through protein-protein interactions and the initiation of antiviral RNA silencing in the fungus, potentially resulting in desirable phenotypic traits for the host, humans, and sometimes both.

Characterization of a Novel Mitovirus of the Sand Fly Lutzomyia longipalpis Using Genomic and Virus-Host Interaction Signatures

Paula Fonseca et al.

Summary: Hematophagous insects, such as sand flies, are major reservoirs of infectious agents due to their close contact with vertebrate hosts. A novel mitovirus, Lul-MV-1, was identified in Lutzomyia longipalpis, suggesting sand flies may serve as hosts for this virus. Molecular analysis showed similarities between Lul-MV-1 and mitochondrial DNA of invertebrate hosts, and the virus-derived small RNA profile indicated activation of the siRNA pathway, further supporting sand flies as potential hosts for this virus.

Armillaria root rot fungi host single-stranded RNA viruses

Riikka Linnakoski et al.

Summary: Species of Armillaria are globally distributed and some form large long-living clones capable of long-range spore-mediated transfer and vegetative spread. This study identified negative-sense RNA viruses, positive-sense RNA viruses, and new members of virus families infecting Armillaria isolates. Thermal treatment can cure Armillaria isolates of viruses, allowing further research on virus effects using infected and virus-free strains.
