Chun-Fang Liao et al.

Summary: During an investigation of fungal saprobes in Yunnan Province, China, a new species named T. cylindrica was discovered in the Tetraplosphaeriaceae family. Through morphological comparison and multi-locus phylogenetic analysis, it was found to have a close affinity to T. aquatica, T. dashaoensis, and T. nagasakiensis. This study provides new insights into the classification of asexual and sexual morphs of Tetraploa and expands our ecological knowledge of the genus.

Morpho-Phylogenetic Evidence Reveals Novel Pleosporalean Taxa from Sichuan Province, China

Xian-Dong Yu et al.

Summary: During the investigation of microfungi from decaying wood in Sichuan Province, several novel fungal taxa of asexual and sexual morphs related to Pleosporales were discovered. Phylogenetic analyses based on gene sequences suggested that these new taxa were distributed in five families and justified the establishment of six new taxa. Among them, Neoangustimassarina was introduced as the second sexual morph genus in Amorosiaceae, and Bambusicola guttulata, O. sichuanensis and P. bambusicola contributed to the diversity of bambusicolous fungi. Detailed descriptions and notes for each new taxon, as well as a brief note for each family, were provided, along with a discussion on the potential richness of fungal diversity in Sichuan Province.

Fossil Tetraploa redefinition and potential contribution of dark pigments for the preservation of its spores in the fossil record

N. B. Nunez Otano et al.

Summary: The establishment of affinities between fossil and extant fungal spores based on morphological traits is challenging, requiring the usage of mycological terms. In this study, we transferred five species of Frasnacritetrus to Tetraploa due to their shared morphological traits. Additionally, we discussed the synthesis of dark pigments in extant Tetraploa spores and their contribution to the preservation of these diaspores in the fossil record. Our findings shed light on the role of melanins in preserving fungal spores and other remains, providing insights into burial histories, thermal maturation effects, fungal lineage evolution, and the use of fungal melanins as biomarkers for paleoecological purposes.

What are fungal species and how to delineate them?

K. W. Thilini Chethana et al.

Summary: Defining and recognizing fungal species has long been a controversial issue, with over 30 species criteria proposed since Darwin's origin of species. Phylogenetic analyses based on multiple loci are widely used, but can mask discordances among fungal groups. In order to delimit fungal species, phylogenetic and phenotypic coherence, as well as the timing of events leading to speciation, need to be considered.
