Design and Performance Evaluation of Integrating the Waste Heat Recovery System (WHRS) for a Silicon Arc Furnace with Plasma Gasification for Medical Waste

Yuehong Dong et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a hybrid scheme that integrates the current waste heat recovery system (WHRS) for a silicon arc furnace with plasma gasification for medical waste. Combustible syngas from medical waste is used to generate power through a gas turbine, while waste heat is recovered for auxiliary heating in the WHRS. The plasma gasifier is also able to dispose of hazardous fine silica particles generated in polysilicon production. The analysis shows that the integrated system can produce 4.17 MW of net power from medical waste at an efficiency of 33.99%. Additionally, it can conveniently dispose of 4320 tons of silica powder and 23,040 tons of medical waste every year. The design requires an investment of 18,843.65 K$ and has a short payback period of 3.94 years, making it feasible and promising for commercial application.

Effect of alkaline metals (Na, Ca) on heavy metals adsorption by kaolinite during coal combustion: Experimental and DFT studies

Jiangze Luo et al.

Summary: This paper investigated the effect and mechanisms of alkaline metals on the adsorption of heavy metals by kaolinite. The results showed that the addition of NaCl decreased the fixation rate of Pb, and the addition of Na2CO3 gradually decreased the fixation rates of all heavy metals, while the addition of CaO had little effect. The alkaline metals also increased the leaching risk of heavy metals from the ash. DFT calculations revealed the inhibitory effect of NaCl and Na2O on the adsorption of heavy metals, while effective adsorption was still feasible after the combination of CaO and metakaolin.

Transformation of Cr under sintering of Ca-rich solid waste with kaolin: Analysis of multi-element coupled interactions

Zhicheng Zhu et al.

Summary: The study investigates the transformation of Cr in Ca-rich river sludge combusted with kaolin, showing that the addition of kaolin inhibits the formation of toxic compounds and solidification of Cr. The research aims to reduce Cr contamination in the environment during the sintering of Ca-rich solid wastes.

Fate and emission behavior of heavy metals during hazardous chemical waste incineration

Xing Chuai et al.

Summary: The fate and emission behavior of heavy metals from a hazardous chemical waste incinerator were investigated. Fly ash and slag contained minerals such as salt, plagioclase, pyroxene, gypsum, calcite, and slaked lime. Arsenic, cadmium, lead, and selenium were enriched in fly ash particles. Cobalt and nickel were more likely to be deposited in the slag, while zinc, chromium, and copper were volatilized into the flue gas and condensed in the cooling tower slag. The use of flue gas purification equipment significantly reduced the concentration of particulate metals.

Theoretical study on the adsorption mechanism of PbCl2/CdCl2 by kaolinite during municipal solid waste pyrolysis

Jiefei Li et al.

Summary: The study investigates the adsorption mechanism of PbCl2 and CdCl2 on kaolinite through computational methods, revealing the influence of pore structure during dehydroxylation process. It is found that Al and Si surfaces of kaolinite have slightly different adsorption behaviors towards the two substances.

An overview of inorganic particulate matter emission from coal/biomass/MSW combustion: Sampling and measurement, formation, distribution, inorganic composition and influencing factors

Wu Yang et al.

Summary: This paper systematically reviews the PM sampling and measurement methods, formation mechanisms, distribution, inorganic composition and the factors influencing PM emission during combustion of coal/biomass/MSW. Coarse particle emissions from coal combustion are generally higher than those from biomass, while ultrafine and fine particle emissions from biomass combustion are higher than those from coal. Particle emissions are related to various influencing factors such as solid fuel particle size, inherent ash content, mineral properties, binding form of inorganic elements, combustion parameters, and ash chemical composition.

Performance assessment of gasification reactors for sustainable management of municipal solid waste

Apinya Chanthakett et al.

Summary: The issue of waste management has gained considerable attention globally due to the increasing waste generation. Though landfill is a widely used solution for waste disposal, it has negative impacts on the environment and human health. Research focuses on methods for energy extraction and waste recycling to improve waste management efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
