Controllable molecular orientation at the interface and coordination with second hydration-sphere to enhance separation of Pt(IV) and Pd(II) in hydrochloric acid solutions: Mass transfer based separation and molecular dynamics

Haitao Zhou et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel strategy for enhancing the separation of PtCl62- and PdCl42- anions using thin-layer organic membrane-based laminar flow (TOMLF) extraction. By controlling the acidified primary amine N1923 (A-N1923) molecular orientation on the surface of concentrated hydrochloric acid with a laminar shear flow, the separation selectivity is primarily determined by the interaction of A-N1923 molecules with the outer sphere-bound water molecules around PtCl62- and PdCl42- anions and can be easily controlled. This work provides new insight into controllable host-guest molecule recognition at a flowing liquid-liquid interface based upon shear-switch laminar flow.

Separation of Pd(II) and Pt(IV) in concentrated hydrochloric acid using thin-layer oil membrane and comparison with conventional extraction

Dechao Xiao et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new thin-layer oil membrane (TOM) extraction strategy for enhanced mutual separation of Pd(II) and Pt(IV) chlorocomplex anions. It was found that Pd(II) can be preferentially extracted even in concentrated hydrochloric acid solutions. The competitive distribution of H+ and Cl- ions at the organic-aqueous interface plays a crucial role in enhancing the separation between Pd(II) and Pt(IV).

Enhanced interfacial salt effect on extraction and separation of Er(III) from Mg(II), Al(III), Fe(III) sulfate aqueous solutions using bubble-supported organic liquid membrane

Xianxian Zhao et al.

Summary: Understanding the effect of different salt cations on the extraction and separation of rare-earth ions is crucial for developing new methods. This study investigated the effect of Mg(II), Al(III), and Fe(III) cations on the extraction of low concentration Er(III) ions using the bubble-supported organic liquid membrane (BSOLM) extraction method. It was found that the extraction and separation of Er(III) ions can be significantly enhanced, which cannot be explained by traditional salt effect theory. The experiments revealed that BSOLM extraction enhances the interfacial salt effect, promoting the extraction of low concentration Er(III) ions.

Extraction and separation of low-concentration Ga (III) in concentrated hydrochloric acid using supported liquid membrane via controlling the dissociation behavior of GaCl4- ions at interface

Haitao Zhou et al.

Summary: A new approach using water as the stripping phase for extraction and recovery of low-concentration Ga (III) from concentrated hydrochloric acid solutions is suggested. It was observed that efficient mass transfer of Ga (III) through the SLM was achieved by introducing a low acidity (pH=2) aqueous solution as the stripping phase.

Molecular Properties and Chemical Transformations Near Interfaces

Musahid Ahmed et al.

Summary: This passage discusses how the properties of bulk water and aqueous solutions change near an interface or in a confined environment, and how air, liquid, and solid interfaces can alter molecular properties and chemical reactivity compared to bulk water and multicomponent solutions. It also highlights advancements in interfacial chemistry through new theory, molecular simulation, and experiments.
