Experimental investigation on wettability of refrigerants on laser-ablated surfaces

Wenjie Xu et al.

Summary: Due to low surface tension, increasing the static contact angle (SCA) of refrigerant on a surface is difficult. Existing studies have used low surface energy coating to increase SCA, but this method suffers from coating peeling. This study used laser surface texturing to increase the SCAs of R134a and R1234ze (E) refrigerants on a surface. The results showed that the SCAs of both refrigerants were significantly increased compared to the polished surface, indicating improved hydrophobicity.

Molecular dynamics simulation of argon pool boiling: A comparative study of employing nanoparticles and creating tree-root type nanostructures

Hamed Hajebzadeh et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effectiveness of innovative nanostructured surfaces in enhancing heat transfer and evaporation rate during the pool boiling process. Molecular dynamics simulation with LAMMPS software and Lennard-Jones potential is used to determine the force field. By creating tree-root type nanostructures, the separation of liquid clusters is delayed, resulting in an increase in fluid temperature. Compared to adding nanoparticles, these nanostructures can enhance the evaporation rate by 60.05% and the argon temperature by 17.13%. Furthermore, they improve the maximum heat flux and convective heat transfer coefficient by 15.46% and 26.86%, respectively.

Summary: Currently, two-phase transition is a popular heat transfer mode in thermal engineering. In this paper, the vaporization processes of R410A mixture under different temperature conditions are studied using molecular dynamics simulation. The results show that the heat transfer mode changes from evaporation to explosive boiling as the temperature increases. The phase transition rate also has a positive exponential relationship with heating temperatures. This finding provides important insights into the nanoscale phase transition and mechanisms of liquid refrigerant mixtures.

Nanoscale liquid-vapor phase change characteristics of binary mixtures from molecular dynamics perspective

Debolina Chakraborty et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the nanoscale thin liquid film boiling of a binary liquid mixture under extremely rapid heating using molecular dynamics simulations. Four distinct phase change scenarios are observed depending on the mixture composition and boundary heating rate. The addition of less volatile Kr delays the evaporation onset and decreases the interaction energy, hindering the mobility of evaporated atoms and changing the onset temperature of liquid splashing from the wall. The near wall atomistic energetics are significantly influenced by the mixture composition. A contour of the phase change modes for Ar-Kr binary mixtures is presented as a function of mixture composition and boundary heating rate, aligning with contemporary works on heat transfer properties.

Summary: This paper conducted a molecular dynamics study on the enhancement of heterogeneous nucleate boiling of mixed liquid on superhydrophilic surfaces. The results showed that the solid-liquid interaction primarily affects the bubble nucleation of mixed liquid. A unique method of increasing the solid-liquid interaction gap of each component of the mixed liquid was proposed for promoting the formation of bubbles and lowering the boiling onset superheat of the mixed liquid. Based on this, a novel enhancement surface was developed.

Summary: The effect of insoluble nitrogen gas on the boiling of water over copper surfaces at different temperatures was investigated. The study found that as the surface temperature increased, the boiling process shifted from normal evaporation to explosive boiling. Nitrogen molecules were found to be adsorbed on the copper substrate, making explosive boiling of water containing nitrogen more likely to occur. Boiling of pure water on a bare substrate was found to benefit heat transfer in large superheat ranges.

Effects of lubricant on evaporation and boiling processes of R1234ze(E): A molecular dynamics study

Summary: This study uses molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the effects of PEC4 on the evaporation and boiling processes of R1234ze(E). It is found that PEC4 suppresses the evaporation and boiling processes of R1234ze(E) and forms an oil film to weaken the heat transfer capacity at the fluid-solid interface. The increase of PEC4 mass fraction leads to higher temperature jump and thermal resistance length, indicating a reduction in heat transfer capacity.
