Arterial calcifications and osteoprotegerin in chronic hemodialysis patients: impact on 6-year survival

Diana Moldovan et al.

Summary: This study found that factors such as AIC, high OPG levels, low ankle-arm index, diabetes, smoking, and lack of arteriovenous fistula are associated with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in chronic hemodialysis patients. Multivariate analysis identified AIC scoring based on the segmentation method and increased OPG levels as independent predictors of mortality.

Osteoprotegerin predicts cardiovascular events in patients treated with haemodialysis

Ping-Hsun Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between bone-associated protein biomarkers and inflammatory cytokines with cardiovascular outcomes. The study found that bone-associated proteins were associated with mortality and cardiovascular events, but this association was attenuated after adjusting for inflammatory proteins. Only osteoprotegerin (OPG) remained associated with cardiovascular events. OPG also improved the prediction of cardiovascular events.

Osteoprotegerin Is a Better Predictor for Cardiovascular and All-Cause Mortality than Vascular Calcifications in a Multicenter Cohort of Patients on Peritoneal Dialysis

Marcela Avila et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to compare the value of vascular calcification (VC), serum osteoprotegerin (OPG) levels, and other biochemical markers as predictors of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD). The study found that OPG was a significant predictor for all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, performing better than VC. In addition, albumin and calcium levels were associated with the risk of mortality.

Summary: Increased concentrations of serum TNFRs are positively associated with ACR and negatively associated with eGFR in patients with type 2 diabetes. The study shows that serum TNFRs are more strongly correlated with kidney measures, while urinary TNFRs are primarily associated with ACR.

Differential organ-specific inflammatory response to progranulin in high-fat diet-fed mice

Maki Murakoshi et al.

Summary: The study found that PGRN deficiency exacerbates inflammation in kidney injury and leads to a decrease in systemic inflammation, particularly in the adipose tissue of mice with high-fat diet-induced obesity. The reduced expression of megalin in renal tubules may partly explain the improvement in tubular vacuolization in KO-HFD mice.

Effects of the SGLT2 inhibitor canagliflozin on plasma biomarkers TNFR-1, TNFR-2 and KIM-1 in the CANVAS trial

Taha Sen et al.

Summary: Higher plasma concentrations of TNFR-1, TNFR-2, and KIM-1 are associated with increased risk of kidney failure in individuals with type 2 diabetes. Canagliflozin can reduce these biomarkers, with early decreases in TNFR-1 and TNFR-2 independently associated with a lower risk of kidney disease progression.

Comprehensive Search for Novel Circulating miRNAs and Axon Guidance Pathway Proteins Associated with Risk of ESKD in Diabetes

Eiichiro Satake et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanisms involved in the progression of diabetic kidney disease to ESKD through global miRNA analysis and proteomics analysis. Circulating miRNAs and proteins in the axon guidance pathway were found to be strongly associated with the risk of ESKD development. These findings suggest that systemic factors play an important role in the development of diabetic kidney disease and may serve as potential targets for new therapies.
