Cities in a post-COVID world

Summary: This paper examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and its consequences on cities and metropolitan regions. At the macrogeographic scale, the pandemic is unlikely to significantly change the economic geography and spatial inequality of the global city system. However, at the microgeographic scale, it may lead to a series of social changes in the structure and morphology of cities, suburbs, and metropolitan regions.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has had both positive and negative impacts on the mental health and wellbeing of young people. The survey found that a high percentage of young people experienced clinical depression, anxiety, and loneliness. The majority of them also reported negative impacts on their work, non-work activities, and mental health. However, some respondents mentioned positive impacts such as increased self-care and reflection due to reduced pressures in daily life.

Summary: Many governments have announced major infrastructure stimulus packages and governance reforms to counter the adverse economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite differences in political, institutional, and policy contexts, there is a clear trend towards state-led infrastructure and expedited delivery. However, the promises of "Building Back Better" did not result in a radical departure from previous practices.
