Deep Dive into Eutectics: On the Origin of Deep and Elevated Eutectics

James D. D. Martin et al.

Summary: There is a lack of understanding regarding the characteristics and properties of deep eutectic solvents (DES). This study introduces the Solvation Shell-Ionic Liquid (SSIL) and -Liquid Solvate (SSLS) models to accurately calculate the liquid usage and eutectics of binary systems. Various types of solutions were tested to demonstrate the applicability of these models. The accurate description of non-ideal terms allows for the prediction of deep and elevated eutectics in different systems.

Everything YouWanted to Know about Deep Eutectic Solvents butWere Afraid to Be Told

Dinis O. Abranches et al.

Summary: Are deep eutectic solvents (DESs) a promising alternative to conventional solvents? Perhaps, but their development is hindered by misconceptions. This article carefully analyzes the meaning, types of precursors, and sustainable traits of DESs. It also discusses their applications in liquefying solid compounds for use as liquid solvents.

Water in Deep Eutectic Solvents: New Insights From Inelastic Neutron Scattering Spectroscopy

Mariela M. Nolasco et al.

Summary: This work investigates the effect of water on the physicochemical properties of deep eutectic solvents using inelastic neutron scattering spectroscopy. The results show that quenching samples in liquid nitrogen can retain the liquid phase morphology of DES at low temperatures. The preference of water molecules to bind to chloride anion is observed in the three studied systems, but they also present distinct features related to their unique properties and structure at the molecular level.

Insights into the Chloride versus Bromide Effect on the Formation of Urea-Quaternary Ammonium Eutectic Solvents

Monia A. R. Martins et al.

Summary: The study investigated the intermolecular interactions between urea and quaternary ammonium salts by measuring the solid-liquid equilibria of their binary mixtures. It was found that anion transfer increases with alkyl chain lengths, leading to negative deviations in urea-rich side. Using bromides instead of chlorides can dampen the nonideality of urea.

Is there depth to eutectic solvents?

Adriaan van den Bruinhorst et al.

Summary: The study discusses the molecular origin of the large melting point depressions observed for deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and points out the lack of understanding about the relationship between DES liquid microstructure and macroscopic properties. The researchers call for experimental quantification of the observed balance between interactions and disorder at the molecular level and the incorporation of this data in thermodynamic models for calculation and prediction of solvation properties and eutectic depth.

Deep Eutectic Solvents: A Review of Fundamentals and Applications

Benworth B. Hansen et al.

Summary: Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) exhibit significant depressions in melting points and tunable physicochemical properties, but there is still a lack of predictive understanding of their microscopic mechanisms and structure-property relationships. Research on complex hydrogen bonding is crucial for a deeper understanding and development of fundamental frameworks for DESs.
