Synthesis, performance and structure characterization of glyoxal-monomethylolurea-melamine (G-MMU-M) co-condensed resin

Haixiang Liu et al.

Summary: To reduce formaldehyde emissions from formaldehyde-based wood adhesive, a novel co-condensed resin of glyoxal-monomethylolurea-melamine (G-MMU-M) was developed. Various formulations of G-MMU-M resins were prepared and their properties and bonding performance were determined. The structures of the resins were characterized using FTIR, 13C NMR, XPS, and ESI-MS. The results showed that the G-MMU-M resins remained stable for 30 days and the bonding strength of plywoods bonded with the resins was influenced by the addition amount of melamine and the MMU/G molar ratio.

Recent advances in urea-formaldehyde resins: converting crystalline thermosetting polymers back to amorphous ones

Eko Setio Wibowo et al.

Summary: Thermosetting and amorphous urea-formaldehyde resins have been mainly used as wood adhesives since 1884, but are known to release formaldehyde and cause indoor air pollution. Recent advances have shown that converting crystalline UF resins back to amorphous polymers through blocking hydrogen bonds can improve cohesion, adhesion properties, and reduce formaldehyde emissions.

A Recent Review of Viscosity Models for Nanofluids

Chidozie Ezekwem

Summary: This article presents the viscosity model of nanofluids and examines the existing empirical, semiempirical, and analytical correlations used for evaluating nanofluid viscosity. It discusses the factors influencing nanofluid viscosity and explores various industrial applications of nanofluids. The available experimental results show significant effects of nanoparticle concentration, sizes, types, temperature, and base fluid surfactant on nanofluid viscosity, but there is no general trend for the influence of particle sizes on viscosity increase. Additionally, while several empirical models have been formulated, there is no universally accepted model for nanofluid viscosity.

Effects of polyethylene glycol on the flexibility of cold-setting melamine-urea-formaldehyde resin

Bengang Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, polyethylene glycol (PEG) was used as a modifying agent to enhance the flexibility and bonding properties of cold-setting melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF) resin adhesive. The results showed that the addition of PEG greatly improved the strength and flexibility of MUF resin, with an optimal PEG addition of 0.72% on the total amount of MUF. Both dry and wet shear strength of MUF resin increased with the addition of PEG, reaching maximum values at 1.80% PEG. However, the thermal stability of MUF resin was found to decrease with the addition of PEG.

Application of Nano-SiO2 Reinforced Urea-Formaldehyde Resin and Molecular Dynamics Simulation Study

Jun Xiao et al.

Summary: This study explored the enhancement mechanism of nano-SiO2 on urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin through a combination of molecular dynamics simulations and experimental tests. The results showed that the best performance enhancement of UF resin was achieved when the addition of nano-SiO2 was 3 wt%. Observing the changes in free volume fraction, radius of gyration, mechanical properties, hydrogen bonding, and radial distribution functions, it was found that the properties of the UF resin were mainly enhanced through the formation of various forms of hydrogen bonds with nano-SiO2.

The reduction of adhesive application in plywood manufacturing by using nanocellulose-reinforced urea-formaldehyde resin

Jakub Kawalerczyk et al.

Summary: The study found that adding nanocellulose in plywood production can significantly improve bonding quality and mechanical properties, while also reducing resin spread rate. Although the introduction of nanocellulose did not reduce free formaldehyde content, it led to a slight decrease in emitted formaldehyde by allowing a reduction in adhesive application.
