Biosensors Based on Phenol Oxidases (Laccase, Tyrosinase, and Their Mixture) for Estimating the Total Phenolic Index in Food-Related Samples

Aleksey Tarasov et al.

Summary: Plant phenolic compounds have bioactive properties and their determination is in high demand for life sciences and industry. Measuring individual phenolic compounds is complex due to the large number of identified substances. Biosensors based on phenol oxidases (POs) have been proposed as alternative devices, but their effectiveness in analyzing food and vegetal samples needs further investigation. This review discusses the properties of laccase and tyrosinase, as well as the development of enzymatic and bienzymatic sensors for estimating total phenolic index (TPI) in food-related samples using nanomaterials for improved performance.

Tyrosinase Immobilization Strategies for the Development of Electrochemical Biosensors-A Review

Alexandra Virginia Bounegru et al.

Summary: This review examines the various tyrosinase immobilization techniques for the development of electrochemical biosensors. Cross-linking immobilization is deemed the most feasible and economical approach, with advantages such as enhanced biosensor performance characteristics and the ability to select reagents and immobilization steps. Recent research has also focused on new immobilization strategies, including cross-linked enzyme aggregates (CLEAs) and magnetic cross-linked enzyme aggregates (mCLEAs).

Organic Electrochemical Transistor with Molecularly Imprinted Polymer-Modified Gate for the Real-Time Selective Detection of Dopamine

Kan Tang et al.

Summary: Due to their low operation voltage, high transconductance, and good aqueous compatibility, organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) have found wide applications in sensing small redox-active molecules. However, selective detection of dopamine can be challenging. To improve the selectivity, a polypyrrole film was electrochemically deposited on the Pt gate electrode and then overoxidized, resulting in an OECT sensor with an overoxidized MIP (o-MIP/Pt) gate. This o-MIP/Pt gate showed similar detection limit as the bare Pt gate, but achieved a good selectivity towards dopamine compared to the interferent ascorbate.

Cooperativity in ATP Hydrolysis by MopR Is Modulated by Its Signal Reception Domain and by Its Protein and Phenol Concentrations

Jayanti Singh et al.

Summary: The NtrC family of AAA+ proteins are bacterial transcriptional regulators that respond to phenol and play a role in the degradation of phenol. MopR, a member of this family, undergoes concentration-dependent oligomerization and is regulated by phenol binding, shifting its equilibrium to a derepressed state with low-affinity for ATP. These findings provide insights into the allosteric regulation of MopR and can be applied to the study of other AAA+ proteins.
