Correlation analysis of anthropometric indices and type 2 diabetes mellitus in residents aged 60 years and older

Xiaoyan Feng et al.

Summary: In recent years, the incidence of obesity among people aged 60 and above has significantly increased, and abdominal obesity has been identified as an independent risk factor for diabetes. However, the relationship between abdominal obesity indicators and diabetes in this age group remains unclear. Therefore, it is necessary to study the correlation between anthropometric indices and diabetes and explore potential predictors.

Normal-weight central obesity and risk of cardiovascular and microvascular events in adults with prediabetes or diabetes: Chinese and British cohorts

Pingting Zhong et al.

Summary: The distribution of body fat is related to the risk of cardiometabolic and microvascular diseases among individuals with prediabetes or diabetes, regardless of their normal body mass index. Measures such as waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, waist-to-height ratio, and trunk-to-leg fat ratio can be used to assess the risk of disease progression.

Association of a lifestyle score with cardiometabolic markers among individuals with diabetes: a cross-sectional study

Christina Baechle et al.

Summary: This study investigated the associations between a healthy lifestyle score and various cardiovascular risk markers, indicators for fatty liver disease, as well as the mass of different types of adipose tissue in adults newly diagnosed with diabetes. The results showed that adhering to a healthier lifestyle was associated with more favorable outcomes, including improved lipid profiles, lower glycated hemoglobin levels, and reduced hepatic fat content and visceral adipose tissue mass. Each additional healthy lifestyle factor adhered to showed a dose-response relationship with more beneficial risk profiles.

IDF Diabetes Atlas: Global, regional and country-level diabetes prevalence estimates for 2021 and projections for 2045

Hong Sun et al.

Summary: This study provides global, regional, and country-level estimates of diabetes prevalence and health expenditures for 2021 and projections for 2045. The global prevalence of diabetes is increasing and is expected to have the greatest relative increase in middle-income countries. Diabetes-related health expenditures are also projected to rise.

Types of diet, obesity, and incident type 2 diabetes: Findings from the UK Biobank prospective cohort study

Jirapitcha Boonpor et al.

Summary: This study investigated the associations between different types of diet and incident type 2 diabetes, and found that fish eaters and fish and poultry eaters had a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to meat eaters, partially due to lower risk of obesity.

Body Fat Distribution, Glucose Metabolism, and Diabetes Status Among Older Adults: The Multiethnic Cohort Adiposity Phenotype Study

Gertraud Maskarinec et al.

Summary: This study found a close association between visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and the development of type 2 diabetes (T2D), particularly among Japanese Americans. The accumulation of ectopic fat differed across ethnic groups and played a significant role in T2D development, with Japanese Americans having higher levels of VAT compared to other ethnic groups.

Total and regional fat-to-muscle mass ratio measured by bioelectrical impedance and risk of incident type 2 diabetes

Ningjian Wang et al.

Summary: Higher total and regional fat-to-muscle mass ratios were associated with an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, independent of BMI. This association was particularly prominent in individuals with a BMI >= 25 kg/m(2).

Katsuyasu Kouda et al.

Summary: The trunk-to-peripheral fat ratio is associated with cardiometabolic risk factors independently of whole-body fat mass, particularly in underweight to normal-weight populations. Parameters of the fat ratio may be useful for assessing cardiometabolic risk factors.
