TOWARDS A TEXT AS DATA APPROACH IN THE HISTORY OF ECONOMICS: AN APPLICATION TO ADAM SMITH'S CLASSICS

Matthieu Ballandonne et al.

Summary: Quantitative techniques in the history and methodology of economics have gained attention, but the application of the text as data approach has been overlooked. We analyze Adam Smith's The Theory of Moral Sentiments and The Wealth of Nations using text as data techniques. We examine the books' topics, styles, and sentiments, and show how word frequency analysis and style analysis can reveal differences and similarities between the books.

Economic uncertainty and natural language processing; The case of Russia?

Wojciech Charemza et al.

Summary: The paper presents a method for constructing country-specific measures of economic policy uncertainty using text data. The authors apply natural language processing and sentiment analysis to construct such measures for Russia and compare it with a previously developed measure based on direct translations and human validation. The results show that their proposed measure performs equally well in evaluating uncertainty related to key events in Russia and performs better in detecting uncertainty effects on Russia's industrial production.
