The effect of osteoporosis and its treatment on fracture healing a systematic review of animal and clinical studies

E. A. Gorter et al.

Summary: Osteoporosis negatively impacts fracture healing, as evidenced by decreased callus formation, bone growth, bone mineral density, biomechanical strength, and delayed cellular and differentiation processes in animal studies. Clinical evidence, while less convincing, also suggests some detrimental effects, such as prolonged healing time. Bisphosphonates and parathyroid hormone may be used during fracture healing with no clear negative effects, and the latter might even decrease time to fracture union without affecting union rates.
