Relationship Between Membrane Vesicles, Extracellular ATP and Biofilm Formation in Antarctic Gram-Negative Bacteria

Nicolas Baeza et al.

Summary: Biofilms provide a safe environment for bacterial survival, with extracellular ATP playing an important role in biofilm formation. ATP released through membrane vesicles can significantly increase the speed and amount of biofilm formation. The role of extracellular ATP and its release through membrane vesicles deserve further study.

Incorporation of Plasmid DNA Into Bacterial Membrane Vesicles by Peptidoglycan Defects in Escherichia coli

Sharmin Aktar et al.

Summary: Membrane vesicles (MVs) released by prokaryotes play a role in cell-cell interactions, with outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) being a type released by Gram-negative bacteria. This study investigated the mechanism of DNA incorporation into OMVs in Gram-negative bacteria, revealing potential routes of DNA leakage and O-IMV formation under conditions of peptidoglycan damage. The findings contribute to understanding vesicle-mediated horizontal gene transfer and the potential use of MVs for DNA transport.

Aberrant Membrane Structures in Hypervesiculating Escherichia coli Strain ΔmlaEΔnlpI Visualized by Electron Microscopy

Yoshihiro Ojima et al.

Summary: The production of OMVs in Delta mlaE Delta nlpI cells increased significantly due to the occurrence of plasmolysis. Additionally, intracellular vesicles and multilamellar OMVs were observed in these cells. The results indicate that cytosolic components in these cells were incorporated into OIMVs and released into the extracellular space.

Pertussis Vaccine Candidate Based on Outer Membrane Vesicles Derived From Biofilm Culture

Francisco Carriquiriborde et al.

Summary: OMV derived from Bordetella pertussis are safe and effective in preventing bacterial colonization in the lungs of immunized mice, and can induce a tissue-resident memory immune response. Vaccines based on OMV exhibit higher immunogenicity and protective capacity against pertactin-deficient B. pertussis strains.
