Numerical study of interactive ingress of calcium leaching, chloride transport and multi-ions coupling in concrete

Qing-feng Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the behavior of multi-ions, including calcium and chloride, in concrete under wastewater and seawater conditions. Multiple mechanisms, such as calcium leaching, chloride transport, and multi-ion coupling, were analyzed. The interactive ingress of multi ions was realized through simulation methods, considering the individual mechanisms and mutual influences. The study also examined the distributions of diverse ions and the evolution mechanisms of porosity, considering the interaction with calcium ions in both pore solution and solid phase. The results suggest that calcium leaching accelerates chloride transport due to coarsened pore structure, and the electrochemical coupling effect of multi ions facilitates calcium leaching in the early stage but slightly delays it in the later stage.

Multi-scale modelling and statistical analysis of heterogeneous characteristics effect on chloride transport properties in concrete

Liang-yu Tong et al.

Summary: The chloride transport properties of concrete were comprehensively analyzed in this study by considering the multi-scale microstructural characteristics. A multi-scale predictive model was proposed to predict the diffusivity of bulk cement paste, mortar, and concrete. The diffusivities of each scale were validated against experimental results by considering the hydration process, the presence of sand/interfacial transition zones, and the aggregate shape. By adopting a statistical analysis method, it was found that capillary pores and C-S-H components dominate the diffusivity estimation of bulk cement paste, while the consideration of ITZ and multi-species ions interaction can enhance the prediction accuracy for diffusivities of mortars and chloride penetration depths in concrete. The proposed multi-scale framework provides a new perspective to study chloride penetration in concrete and enhances the understanding of deterioration mechanisms for reinforced concrete structures in complex or marine environments.

A Numerical Study of Moisture and Ionic Transport in Unsaturated Concrete by Considering Multi-ions Coupling Effect

Zhaozheng Meng et al.

Summary: This study modeled the moisture and multi-ionic transport in unsaturated concrete in three dimensions, considering the contributions from both water vapor and liquid. By calibrating parameters, the numerical results were in good agreement with experimental data, demonstrating the validity of the presented model. The results showed that neglecting the multi-ions coupling effect would lead to an underestimation of chloride concentration, and the saturation degree had a significant impact on the coupling strength among different ions. Other findings that have not been reported in existing studies were also highlighted.

Developing a sustainable concrete incorporating bentonite clay and silica fume: Mechanical and durability performance

Muhammad Ashraf et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of bentonite clay (BC) and silica fume (SF) as partial replacements of cement in concrete. The results show that adding SF improves compressive strength, and BC and SF enhance pore structures and resistance against sulfate attack and chloride ingress. The proposed empirical formulations using machine learning techniques accurately predict the properties of concrete. Furthermore, BC and SF can reduce carbon emissions, making the proposed concrete mixtures environmentally viable for the construction sector.

Effect of supplementary cementitious materials on carbonation of cement pastes

Summary: The study found that anhydrous phases are less decalcified than hydrated phases after carbonation, with most of the calcium in slag-containing cement pastes remaining in the non-hydrated part of the slag. The C-A,S-H phase undergoes significant modification during carbonation, showing a coupling with hydrated aluminate phases. Ultimately, in all carbonated materials, these phases tend to form an aluminosilicate gel with less water content than the original hydrates.
