Impacts of dust events on chemical characterization and associated source contributions of atmospheric particulate matter in northern China

Ruiyu Li et al.

Summary: Sand and dust have significant impacts on air quality, climate, and human health. This study investigated the effects of dust storms on the chemical composition and source contributions of PM2.5 in two industrial cities in northern China. The results showed that dust events led to increased PM2.5 concentrations and changes in chemical composition. Dust sources contributed a significant percentage of PM2.5 mass, even in a city far from the sand source. This study emphasizes the need for effective control of sand sources to mitigate the impact on air quality.

Comprehensive simulations of new particle formation events in Beijing with a cluster dynamics-multicomponent sectional model

Chenxi Li et al.

Summary: This study simulated new particle formation and growth in urban Beijing using a discrete-sectional model. The simulations roughly captured the evolution of observed particle size distributions, but the simulated particle growth rate was insufficient to yield the observed particle number concentrations and mode diameter. Through sensitivity analysis, under-detected oxygenated organic molecules (OOMs) were identified as a likely cause for the discrepancy.

Measurement report: Rapid decline of aerosol absorption coefficient and aerosol optical property effects on radiative forcing in an urban area of Beijing from 2018 to 2021

Xinyao Hu et al.

Summary: This four-year study conducted simultaneous measurements in urban Beijing and found that the absorption coefficient of PM10 and PM1 decreased significantly from 2018 to 2021, indicating reduced primary emissions due to pollution control measures. PM2.5 mass concentration decreased, while single scattering albedo increased, suggesting a decrease in the fraction of absorbing aerosols and improved air quality. The contribution of fine particles to absorption became more important, and the contribution from brown carbon to light absorption decreased. The aerosol radiative forcing efficiency became more negative, influenced by increasing single scattering albedo.

Summary: Aerosols are crucial in air quality, climate, and human health, with particle morphology and density providing key information on their composition and aging. A new method using AAC-DMA-SPAMS system was developed to investigate geometric descriptors of particles, establishing a quantitative relationship between them. This system can provide valuable insights into the shape, density, and aging processes of ambient particles.

Long-term trend of new particle formation events in the Yangtze River Delta, China and its influencing factors: 7-year dataset analysis

Xiaojing Shen et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of anthropogenic emission reductions in China since 2013 by analyzing particle number size distribution and new particle formation events in the Yangtze River Delta region. It was found that Aitken and accumulation mode number concentrations decreased significantly, while nucleation mode concentrations showed a mixed trend. Factors such as condensation sink and sulfuric acid concentration played key roles in NPF events, while meteorological factors had minor effects. Studies on PNSD and NPF events are essential for assessing climate change mitigation strategies and air quality improvements.

Densities of internally mixed organic-inorganic particles from mobility diameter measurements of aerodynamically classified aerosols

Elinor T. Vokes et al.

Summary: This study accurately measured the density of dry internally mixed particles and found significant deviations from ideal mixing, with accuracies and precisions of approximately 5% and 1% respectively. The use of RK polynomials to describe volume changes in mixing was effective in explaining non-ideal mixing.

Summary: This study investigated the effective density, dynamic shape factor, and volatile mixing of non-spherical non-homogenous particles using a combination of aerosol instruments. The results showed that the effective density of particles varied with size, the dynamic shape factor increased with mobility diameter, and smaller particles had a higher volatile mass fraction.

Characterization of tandem aerosol classifiers for selecting particles: implication for eliminating the multiple charging effect

Yao Song et al.

Summary: Accurate particle classification is crucial in aerosol studies. In this study, the transfer functions of the DMA-CPMA and DMA-AAC systems were calculated in static configurations for flame-generated soot particles. Equations were proposed to eliminate the multiple charging effect when selecting particles with a certain mass-mobility relationship. The results showed that the ability to remove multiply charged particles depends on the particle morphology and resolution settings of the classifiers. The potential influence of the multiple charging effect should be considered in estimating size- and mass-resolved optical properties.

Measurement report: Long-term changes in black carbon and aerosol optical properties from 2012 to 2020 in Beijing, China

Jiaxing Sun et al.

Summary: Atmospheric aerosols, including equivalent black carbon (eBC) and aerosol optical properties, have experienced significant changes in Beijing, China, due to the implementation of the Clean Air Action Plan. The reduction in eBC and the light extinction coefficient of fine particles indicate improvements in air quality. The increase in single-scattering albedo (SSA) and mass extinction efficiency (MEE) suggests an increasing role of scattering aerosols in radiative forcing. Additionally, the changes in brown carbon (BrC) and its contribution to total BrC highlight the enhanced secondary formation of BrC. These findings have important implications for aerosol-boundary layer interactions and air quality improvement.

Contribution of Atmospheric Oxygenated Organic Compounds to Particle Growth in an Urban Environment

Xiaohui Qiao et al.

Summary: The study in urban Beijing shows that gas-phase oxygenated organic molecules (OOMs) exhibit clear seasonal variations, with the highest concentrations in summer and the lowest in winter. Nitrogen-containing OOMs make up a significant fraction of the total growth rate, but their slightly higher volatility results in a lower contribution to particle growth.

Sulfuric acid-amine nucleation in urban Beijing

Runlong Cai et al.

Summary: Based on long-term atmospheric measurements in Beijing, it was found that the collision of H2SO4-amine clusters is the dominant mechanism for initiating NPF in urban environments, while high aerosol concentration limits the rate of new particle formation. Additionally, in Beijing, the formation of H2SO4-amine clusters is sometimes restricted by low amine concentrations.
