Nonlinear coupling between radial and axial vibrations during single-axis acoustic levitation in mid-air

Naohiro Sugita et al.

Summary: In this study, a nonlinear dynamic model for single-axis standing-wave acoustic levitation is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The aim is to understand the nonlinear coupling between radial and axial vibrations and its impact on levitation stability. A power series expansion of the acoustic radiation force acting on a levitated spherical particle is employed, allowing for the specific consideration of the nonlinear coupling term in the equation of motion. Experimental measurements are compared with the derived asymptotic solutions to validate the coupling effect. The results show that the natural radial frequency decreases due to axial vibration, leading to destabilization of the radial equilibrium state.

Theoretical investigation of the levitation force generated by underwater squeeze action

Yuanyuan Liu et al.

Summary: This study proposes an analytical model for underwater near-field acoustic levitation (NFAL) and investigates its levitation performance. The study deduces the Reynolds equations to describe the film pressure distribution and determine the compressibility of the fluid. The comparison of calculated squeeze film forces with experimental observations confirms the fluid's compressibility. The numerical results show that increasing the water temperature decreases the mean squeeze film force above 20 degrees C, while increasing the vibration amplitude increases the mean squeeze film force.

A novel non-contact carrying and transportation method based on near-field acoustic levitation and negative pressure adsorption

Yuanbo Li et al.

Summary: A novel non-contact carrying and transportation technology is proposed based on near-field acoustic levitation and negative pressure adsorption effect. This technology enables the levitation of disk-shaped objects at a height of tens or even hundreds of micrometers and generates restoring force to move the objects towards the center of the acoustic emission plate during transportation. The study demonstrates improved speed and efficiency in the non-contact transportation system.

Viscoacoustic squeeze-film force on a rigid disk undergoing small axial oscillations

S. Ramanarayanan et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the air flow induced by a rigid circular disk or piston vibrating harmonically near a parallel surface. It proposes a viscoacoustic analysis method to explore different flow regions and corresponding flow parameters. The analysis provides a unified theory for axisymmetric squeeze films and offers a simplified parametric description of the time-averaged repulsion/attraction force, which may have value in applications such as non-contact fluid bearings and robot locomotion.

Rapid rise of planar object by near-field acoustic levitation on recessed acoustic radiation surface

Kohei Aono et al.

Summary: NFAL can create levitation for a planar object on the vibrating surface, while a vibrating surface with a recess can lead to jumping behavior accompanied by a snapping sound. Jumping occurs when the minimum value of the acoustic radiation force exceeds the weight of the object, and the snapping sound is generated by focused sound pressure due to acoustic resonance in the recessed space.

Modeling and stability characteristics of bump-type gas foil bearing rotor systems considering stick-slip friction

Runeng Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, a comprehensive model was developed to investigate the effect of friction on the stability and frictional dissipation mechanism of gas foil bearing (GFB) rotor systems. The results revealed that the friction coefficient and disturbance magnitude affect the stick-slip states, which directly govern the dissipation capacity of the foil structure.

Stiffness modeling for near field acoustic levitation bearings

Yaoke Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the dynamic characteristics of near field levitation bearings were investigated by defining and deriving two types of system stiffness through theoretical analysis. The results indicate that the proposed stiffness model can effectively predict levitation force and height, and eliminate structural resonance effects. Additionally, unique dynamic behaviors were investigated and predicted based on the stiffness model.

Theoretical analysis of a contactless transportation system for cylindrical objects based on ultrasonic levitation

Yuanyuan Liu et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a contactless transportation system for cylindrical objects based on grooved radiators. The system utilizes asymmetrical pressure distribution generated by grooves on the concave surface of the radiator to drive the levitator horizontally. Parameter studies show that groove depth, arc length, width, radiator vibration amplitude, and levitator weight are key factors influencing thrusting force.
