How does teacher bias influence students?: An introduction to the special issue on teachers? implicit attitudes, instructional practices, and student outcomes

Jessica T. DeCuir-Gunby et al.

Summary: Implicit bias, which is based on stereotypes and prejudices, is a useful way to understand and explain discrimination issues, especially regarding race. Although there is a growing body of research on implicit bias, there is limited research on its role within the classroom. This special issue aims to broaden and challenge current thinking on teacher implicit bias and attitudes, as well as their influence on students.

Pre-service teachers? desire to control bias: Implications for the endorsement of culturally affirming classroom practices

Revathy Kumar et al.

Summary: This study integrates social-psychological and educational research to examine the relationship between preservice teachers' race-related perceptions of Black students and their endorsed instructional approaches. The results showed that motivation to be unprejudiced and motivation to appear unprejudiced mediated the endorsement of instructional practices, with explicit bias playing a significant role. Additionally, it was observed that White preservice teachers displayed a significant implicit preference for White over Black students compared to their ethnic minority counterparts.

The legacies of systemic and internalized oppression: Experiences of microaggressions, imposter phenomenon, and stereotype threat on historically marginalized groups

Kevin L. Nadal et al.

Summary: Historically marginalized groups are likely to internalize negative feelings about their identities, such as imposter phenomenon, stereotype threat, and microaggressions. Although these concepts have been discussed in academic literature, less is written about the connections between them. Using intersectionality theory, this paper proposes an interactional model to describe how the cumulative effects of microaggressions exacerbate internalized oppression and provides recommendations for future research and practice in psychology.

Associations between teacher expectations and racial disproportionality in discipline referrals

Maria Reina Santiago-Rosario et al.

Summary: The study revealed a significant racial discipline gap in elementary school teachers' expectations, with Black students experiencing disproportionate office discipline referrals compared to White students. Students with lower expectations from teachers were more likely to receive ODRs than those who were rated highly, regardless of race. Furthermore, for every unit increase in teacher expectations, the disparity in ODRs between Black, Latinx, and White students decreased.
