Decolonizing Deliberative Democracy: Perspectives from Below

Subhabrata Bobby Banerjee

Summary: This paper offers a decolonial critique of received knowledge about deliberative democracy, arguing that its key assumptions do not hold in regions outside the West and fail to address the needs of marginalized stakeholders defending their lands and livelihoods in the former colonies. It suggests that hegemonic models of democracy are inadequate in addressing issues of inequality and colonial difference, and proposes counterhegemonic alternatives for democratization of democracy from below.

In pursuit of a global mindset: Toward a theory-driven pedagogy

Vanessa C. Hasse

Summary: Despite decades of research, there is no cohesive framework for developing the global mind-set in learners. In this study, the author proposes a theory-driven pedagogy that combines insights from existing literature on the global mind-set with transformative learning theory. Five course design principles are distilled, helping learners enhance their ability to handle cognitive complexity and foster a cosmopolitan perspective. The efficacy of this approach is supported by a qualitative text analysis of comments from a graduate-level course, suggesting distinct response patterns in terms of learning experience and broadening perspectives.
