Technological assessments on recent developments in fine and coarse particle flotation systems

Ahmad Hassanzadeh et al.

Summary: This paper critically evaluates the two different strategies in ore flotation processing: the classical mechanical flotation cells and the new flotation apparatuses. Through a comprehensive comparative study, it is found that the traditional mechanical cells are suitable for fine particle flotation, while the new apparatuses such as Jameson and RefluxTM flotation cells are highly efficient in recovering fine particles. In addition, fluidized bed and HydroFloatTM cells are suitable for coarse particle recovery.

Dense liquid flotation: Can coarse particle flotation performance be enhanced by controlling fluid density?

J. B. Dankwah et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of fluid density on bubble-particle detachment and coarse particle flotation performance. The results show that coarser particles follow the detachment behavior of finer particles at increased fluid density, and flotation performance can be improved by controlling fluid density within a certain limit.

Investigation of Internal Classification in Coarse Particle Flotation of Chalcopyrite Using the CoarseAIR™

Luke J. Crompton et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel system, CoarseAIR(TM), which utilizes a three-phase fluidized bed and a system of inclined channels to facilitate coarse particle flotation and internal size classification. The study investigated internal classification in the CoarseAIR(TM) system through a series of experiments and found that a spacing of 9 mm between the inclined channels resulted in better copper recovery and gangue rejection. Higher gas fluxes had a negative effect on the recovery of coarser hydrophobic particles, while a gas flux of 0.15 cm/s achieved the best performance.

Coarse particle separation by fluidized-bed flotation: A comprehensive review

V. Kromah et al.

Summary: The effective separation of coarse particles has become an important focus in the ore processing industry. Traditional flotation methods face challenges in floating these particles, leading to the development of novel fluidized-bed flotation cells (FBFCs) which have shown higher potential in processing coarse particles. FBFCs offer longer retention time, reduced buoyancy constraints, increased particle-bubble attachment, and better bubble-liquid segregation capacity, resulting in excellent coarse particle recovery.

Bed expansion and gas holdup characteristics of bubble-assisted fluidization of liquid-particle suspensions in a HydroFloat cell

Md Tariqul Islam et al.

Summary: The study examined the effects of SDS on the fluidization process in HydroFloat cells, finding that low SDS concentrations lead to decreased bed expansion, while in bubble-liquid-particle fluidization, bed expansion decreases with increasing gas velocity and decreasing liquid velocity. High SDS concentrations result in expanded beds with higher heights in the presence of SDS.
