In-situ production of iron flocculation and reactive oxygen species by electrochemically decomposing siderite: An innovative Fe-EC route to remove trivalent arsenic

Mengfei Chen et al.

Summary: Researchers have developed an innovative iron electrocoagulation route using an electrochemical-siderite packed column to remove trivalent arsenic from water. The process involves the electrochemical decomposition of siderite to produce ferrous ions and hydroxide, which oxidize As (III) to As (V) and are then removed by iron oxide precipitates. The results demonstrate the high efficiency of this method for arsenic removal under specific conditions, suggesting its potential application for treating As (III) pollution.

Inactivation of Microcystis aeruginosa by H2O2 generated from a carbon black polytetrafluoroethylene gas diffusion electrode in electrolysis by low-amperage electric current

Yuting Zhang et al.

Summary: This study prepared a carbon black polytetrafluoroethylene gas diffusion electrode (C-PTFE GDE) by a simple adhesive coating method, which was stable. The inactivation of Microcystis aeruginosa was conducted using low-amperage electric current electrolysis with Ti/RuO2 as the anode and C-PTFE GDE as the cathode. It was found that electrolysis rapidly and strongly inactivated algae when an electric field existed, while electrogenerated oxidants dominated algae inactivation. The concentration of H2O2 was much higher than the concentration of chlorines, and H2O2 attacked photosystem II of the algae, causing oxidative damage to membrane lipids and affecting the photosynthetic capacity.

Isolation of cobalt single atoms on hollow B, N co-doped defective carbon nanotubes for hydrogen peroxide production and tandem reagent-free electro-Fenton oxidation

Lijun Yang et al.

Summary: Single-atom catalysts (SACs) are challenging to choose the right substrates and configurations. This study introduces a nanotube reactor strategy to confine Co-SACs in B,N co-doped defective carbon nanotubes (Co-B,N-CNTs) through spatial isolation and dopant anchoring. The Co-B,N-CNTs demonstrated excellent activity and selectivity for H2O2 production via a two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) pathway, with a high yield of 1508 mmol L-1 gcat-1 in HClO4. The outstanding electrocatalytic performance of Co-B,N-CNTs is attributed to the uniformly dispersed Co-SACs, defect-rich active sites, regulated electronic structure, and favorable 3D hollow nanotube structure. Furthermore, the in-situ generation of H2O2 significantly accelerated the degradation of organic pollutants and Cr (IV) detoxification through a reagent-free double-cathode electro-Fenton process. This work provides insights into the design of multi-functional catalysts for sustainable chemical production and innovative wastewater treatment technology.

In-situ production and activation of H2O2 for enhanced degradation of roxarsone by FeS2 decorated resorcinol-formaldehyde resins

Xia Li et al.

Summary: FeS2-RFR catalyst was successfully prepared for in-situ production of H2O2 and efficient removal of ROX under solar light illumination. This catalyst degraded more than 97% of ROX within 2 hours and selectively transformed ROX into low-toxic As(V) without inhibition effect from cations, anions, or humic acid. FeS2-RFR showed good stability and efficiency in degrading organoarsenic compounds, providing a sustainable and eco-friendly method.

Nanointerface engineering Z-scheme CuBiOS@CuBi2O4 heterojunction with O-S interpenetration for enhancing photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide generation and accelerating chromium(VI) reduction

Lijun Yang et al.

Summary: Designing a core-shell nanointerface is beneficial for enhancing the photocatalytic performance of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production. A one-dimensional (1D) CuBiOS@CuBi2O4 nanorods with a core-shell nanostructure and O-S interpenetrated nanointerface was synthesized through in-situ anion exchange. The O-S interpenetration at the heterogeneous interface with surface oxygen vacancies effectively improved light absorption, reduced interface contact resistance, facilitated band bending, and enhanced charge separation and transfer as a bridge. The catalyst with tunable O-S nanointerface exhibited significantly improved photocatalytic performances in H2O2 production.

Boosting hydrogen peroxide accumulation by a novel air-breathing gas diffusion electrode in electro-Fenton system

Yanshi Zheng et al.

Summary: By preparing a novel air-breathing gas diffusion electrode (GDE) with multiform hydrophobic layers, the problems of high energy consumption, low cathodic oxygen transfer rate, and low H2O2 production efficiency in the electro-Fenton (EF) technology can be addressed. This new GDE allows air to diffuse to the triphase interface spontaneously, improving the oxygen transfer rate and expanding the triphase interfaces to achieve a high H2O2 accumulation.

Resin-based photo-self-Fenton system with intensive mineralization by the synergistic effect of holes and hydroxyl radicals

Xindan Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a hydrogen peroxide-free resin photo-Fenton system was developed for efficient degradation of organic pollutants. The system exhibited excellent performance due to the synergistic effect of hydroxyl radicals and holes, resulting in significantly higher degradation rates compared to other systems. The high performance was mainly attributed to the reduction of iron ions by electrons and increased utilization of hydrogen peroxide, as well as the prevention of macromolecular polymer intermediates, leading to high mineralization efficiency. This finding offers a promising route for eco-friendly and efficient wastewater treatment using visible-light photo-self-Fenton systems.
