Valorization of Dredged Sediments and Recycled Concrete Aggregates in Road Subgrade Construction

Yassine Abriak et al.

Summary: Large quantities of dredged sediments and recycled concrete materials are being generated annually worldwide, causing environmental problems when disposed of in landfills. Depletion of high-quality construction raw materials necessitates finding alternative options. This study investigates the potential of using dredged sediments and recycled concrete aggregates in road subgrade construction, and the test results confirm their feasibility in meeting the required physical, mechanical, and geotechnical properties. Additionally, leaching tests demonstrate the environmental safety of the proposed mixes for road subgrade construction, with future studies exploring their usage in foundations and base layers.

Mechanical and microstructural properties of just add water geopolymer cement comprised of Thermo-Mechanicalsynthesis Sediments-Fly ash mix

Elie Mahfoud et al.

Summary: This study explores the use of dredged sediments in the design of geopolymer mixtures. Different aluminosilicate sources were prepared by substituting fly ash with sediment at varying ratios. The mixtures were thermomechanically treated and combined with sodium silicates and sodium hydroxide to form geopolymers. Optimal mixtures were identified based on mechanical strength measurements and various characterizations. Results indicate that incorporating sediments improves the mechanical performance of geopolymers and can serve as a source of aluminosilicate.

Summary: Permeable pavements are effective in managing stormwater, but their performance can be affected by sediment properties. This study simulated and analyzed the behavior of a permeable asphalt under different sediment loads and rainfall events, finding that permeability was significantly reduced by sediment surface loads, but could be recovered through vacuum cleaning. Sediment particle size distribution, organic matter content, and rainfall events sequence were key variables influencing permeability loss and recovery, as well as water quality.

Fly Ash and Natural Pozzolana Impacts on Sustainable Concrete Permeability and Mechanical Properties

Mohamed O. Mohsen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of using fly ash (FA) and natural pozzolana (NP) as partial cement replacements on the permeability, mechanical, and microstructural properties of sustainable concrete. Various concrete mixes with different percentages of FA and NP replacements were prepared, and their compressive and flexural strengths were tested at different curing days. The results showed that the partial replacement of cement with low percentages of FA and NP resulted in slight strength improvements. Permeability testing also indicated that FA and NP replacements had a positive impact on reducing the permeability of concrete.

Sarra Meskini et al.

Summary: The study investigated the valorization of phosphogypsum and fly ash as road construction materials through lime stabilization. Statistical analysis showed that phosphogypsum addition decreased measured responses, while fly ash and lime caused them to increase. Fly ash addition notably increased compressive strengths at early ages, while at longer curing periods, the interaction with lime and the use of phosphogypsum as a catalyst improved fly ash reactivity.

Summary: This study investigates the formation mechanism of authigenic chlorite in the Huagang Formation and identifies favorable sedimentary facies belts for sweet reservoirs. Summary: Dredging is crucial for maintaining proper water depths in ports and bays, but the resulting sediments often contain high levels of toxic metals and pollutants. Conventional linear sediment management methods are unsustainable, and more efficient circular approaches are needed. However, the development of sediment-based by-products is still limited, and technical and socio-political barriers need to be overcome to implement circular economy in the dredged sediment sector.

The experimental results show that the addition of fly ash and the increase of curing days can improve the strength and permeability of the stabilized soil, while reducing the compression and swelling indices. Class C fly ash has better effects on the improvement of stabilized soil compared to class F fly ash.

Assessment of the long-term leaching characteristics of cement-slag stabilized/solidified contaminated sediment

Wan-lu Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the long-term leachability of four metals in sediments mixed with Ordinary Portland Cement and Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag binders, showing that the binders have excellent immobilization capacity for the metals, with releases highly dependent on pH and curing time. The first-order diffusion model was found to be the most applicable for describing the leaching characteristics of the metals, with leaching rate controlled by surface wash-off initially and then by diffusion. The leachability indices suggest that the cement-slag S/S sediment could be considered as an environmentally sustainable material with potential beneficial uses in construction.

Effect of fly ash on microstructural and resistance characteristics of dredged sediment stabilized with lime and cement

Ana Paula Furlan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the efficacy of combining fly ash (FA) with lime or cement, or both, in improving the properties of dredged sediment (DS). The results show that the use of FA leads to a refinement of the microstructure and reduction of macro porosity at early stages, while the long-term densification of the microstructure is attributed to the pozzolanic property of FA. DS stabilized with FA exhibit lower shrinkage and higher mechanical resistance compared to those without FA, especially when FA is mixed with cement.
