Enhancing wide-area damping controllers via data-assisted power system linear models

Mario R Arrieta Paternina et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a new control strategy for inter-area oscillation damping using the Loewner interpolation method and Bellman's principle. The strategy includes a data-assisted WADC architecture supported by a LQG controller and a linear quadratic Gaussian estimator. The proposed scheme is demonstrated to effectively mitigate inter-area oscillations in two benchmark power systems.

Intelligent wide-area damping controller for static var compensator considering communication delays

Faisal Jamsheed et al.

Summary: This paper presents the utilization of a static var compensator in coordination with an intelligent online controller to improve the oscillation damping of the power system under various operating conditions and communication delays. A linear identifier is used for system identification, ensuring low computational burden and real-time implementation. The location of the controller is selected based on controllability and bus voltage participation factors, and an empirical expression is proposed to offset the effects of communication time delays. Time-domain simulations on single- and multi-machine power systems validate the effectiveness of the proposed intelligent controller, compared to conventional and wide-area damping controllers.

A multi-model multi-objective robust damping control of GCSC for hybrid power system with offshore/onshore wind farm

Rehan Sadiq et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of the large-scale integration of wind energy resources on low-frequency oscillations in the modern power grid. A multi-model multi-objective robust control framework is proposed to design a supplementary damping controller for stabilizing a hybrid power system with a permanent magnet synchronous generator-based offshore wind farm and a doubly-fed induction generator-based onshore wind farm. The optimization problem is formulated as a bilinear matrix inequality considering H2/H infinity performance and solved through a two-step linear matrix inequality approach. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is validated through simulation studies.

Interacting Multiple Model Strategy Based Adaptive Wide-Area Damping Controller Design for Wind Farm Embedded Power System

Abhineet Prakash et al.

Summary: This paper presents a Wide-Area Damping Controller (WADC) to mitigate the impact of intermittent Wind Turbine Systems (WTSs) on Low-Frequency Oscillations (LFOs) in the power system. The WADC adopts a modal-based prescribed degree approach to adjust the positions of critical modes and provide adequate damping. However, the fixed operating point and time delay in feedback signals can lead to performance degradation, hence the use of an Interacting Multiple Model (IMM) framework to handle these uncertainties and maintain robust damping performance.

Optimal design and control loop selection for a STATCOM wide-area damping controller considering communication time delays

Mohamed M. Radwan et al.

Summary: This study proposes a systematic procedure based on numerical approaches for designing a STATCOM-based WADC, which includes control loop selection, control design, and adaptive time delay compensation. Geometric analysis is used to choose the STATCOM location, and a novel optimization-based signal selection methodology is proposed. The controller parameters are tuned using two optimization techniques, PSO and SAMPE-JAYA. An adaptive delay compensator is designed to mitigate the effects of communication time delays.

Interacting Multiple Model Strategy Based Adaptive Wide-Area Damping Controller Design for Wind Farm Embedded Power System

Abhineet Prakash et al.

Summary: A Wide-Area Damping Controller (WADC) is designed to provide adequate damping for Low-Frequency Oscillations (LFOs) caused by intermittent Wind Turbine Systems (WTSs). The WADC uses a modal-based prescribed degree approach to shift the concerned modes. However, the fixed operating point and time delay in feedback signals may lead to robust performance issues. To address this, an Interacting Multiple Model (IMM) infrastructure is employed, assigning weights to probable WADCs based on output error deviation using the Bayesian framework. Simulations show that the proposed IMM-based WADC provides sufficient damping for critical LFO modes under operating point and time delay uncertainties.
