Exotic Reaction Dynamics in the Gas-Phase Preparation of Anthracene (C14H10) via Spiroaromatic Radical Transients in the Indenyl-Cyclopentadienyl Radical-Radical Reaction

Chao He et al.

Summary: The gas-phase reaction between the 1-indenyl radical and the cyclopentadienyl radical was studied using synchrotron-based mass spectrometry coupled with a pyrolytic reactor. The isomer selective production of phenanthrene, anthracene, and benzofulvalene was identified through soft photoionization with tunable vacuum ultraviolet photons. Our findings challenge the classical theory regarding the combination of radicals and provide insight into the evolution of the cosmic carbon budget.

Five-membered ring compounds from the ortho-benzyne plus methyl radical reaction under interstellar conditions

Jordy Bouwman et al.

Summary: Reactive open-shell species, such as radicals and biradicals, are crucial in the formation of (poly)cyclic hydrocarbon species in various interstellar environments. In this study, the products of the reaction between o-benzyne and methyl radical were identified and characterized. The formation of five-membered ring species in cold molecular clouds was successfully explained by the reaction pathway.

Unconventional excited-state dynamics in the concerted benzyl (C7H7) radical self-reaction to anthracene (C14H10)

Ralf Kaiser et al.

Summary: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), prevalent in deep space and on Earth, can be formed more efficiently through excited state dynamics in the gas phase, challenging the conventional wisdom that PAH formation solely occurs on electronic ground state surfaces. This finding opens up new possibilities for the rapid synthesis of aromatic, multi-ringed structures.

Discovery of fulvenallene in TMC-1 with the QUIJOTE line survey

J. Cernicharo et al.

Summary: In this study, fulvenallene was successfully detected in the direction of TMC-1, with a derived column density slightly lower than its potential precursor cyclopentadiene and higher than the ethynyl derivatives. Upper limits were obtained for fulvene, toluene, and styrene, indicating the need for further research on the synthesis pathways of cyclic molecules in TMC-1.

Interstellar detection of the highly polar five-membered ring cyanocyclopentadiene

Michael C. McCarthy et al.

Summary: Through a combination of laboratory rotational spectroscopy and radio band surveys, 1-cyano-1,3-cyclopentadiene (1-cyano-CPD) has been detected in a starless cloud core TMC-1 at a higher abundance than expected. This finding suggests a rich aromatic chemistry in molecular clouds, which is not fully understood theoretically.

First aromatic ring formation by the radical-chain reaction of vinylacetylene and propargyl

Hanfeng Jin et al.

Summary: Recent investigations have shown that the clustering of hydrocarbons by radical-chain reaction (CHRCR) mechanism is crucial for the rapid synthesis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and soot. Resonance-stabilized radicals (RSRs) are essential in this mechanism, with non-benzene first-ring species being significant as precursors of larger aromatic hydrocarbons. Stable C7H7 RSRs, such as benzyl, tropyl, and vinyl-cyclopentadienyl, are key in the growth of PAHs.

Five Birds with One Stone: Photoelectron Photoion Coincidence Unveils Rich Phthalide Pyrolysis Chemistry

Jordy Bouwman et al.

Summary: Phthalide pyrolysis can give rise to different C7H6 isomers at both low and high temperatures, with varying ionization energies. Specific features can be used for selective detection of these species, and at elevated temperatures, the isomers may lose hydrogen atoms and form fulvenallenyl radicals.

Gas-phase synthesis of benzene via the propargyl radical self-reaction

Long Zhao et al.

Summary: The study provides compelling evidence that the self-recombination of two resonantly stabilized propargyl radicals in dilute environments can form the very first ringed aromatic benzene of PAHs. Along with benzene, other structural isomers and o-benzyne were detected and their branching ratios were experimentally quantified and verified with computational simulations. These results help uncover molecular growth pathways in various environments and improve our understanding of hydrocarbon chemistry in the universe.
