Adsorption of organophosphate pesticides from aqueous solution: a review of recent advances

K. O. Iwuozor et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the removal of organophosphate pesticides (OPPs) from aqueous media via adsorption. The highest reported adsorption capacity for OPPs is found for chlorpyrifos using mesoporous MgFe2O4 adsorbent. The dominant adsorption mechanisms include hydrogen bonding, complexation reactions, electrostatic interactions, and electron donor-acceptor interactions. The Langmuir or Freundlich classical isotherm models are the best-fit for describing OPPs' adsorption equilibrium in most cases, while the pseudo-second-order model is the best-fit for modeling OPPs' uptake kinetics. Thermodynamic studies reveal that OPPs' uptake is usually spontaneous. Competitive adsorption studies show that the uptake capacity of OPPs decreases in the presence of negatively charged ions and anions. Most OPPs exhibit a removal efficiency > 70% even after five regeneration cycles.

Ultrasound in the deproteinization process for chitin and chitosan production

D. Vallejo-Dominguez et al.

Summary: Chitin and chitosan are widely studied for food preservation and active packaging applications. This study proposed modification to the chemical synthesis of chitin from shrimp shells using high-frequency ultrasound. The impact of sonication time on the deproteinization step of chitin chitosan preparation was examined. The chemical identities of chitin and chitosan were verified using infrared spectroscopy. The influence of ultrasound on the deacetylation degree, molecular weight and particle size of the biopolymer products was analysed. The application of ultrasound resulted in reduced protein content and particle size of chitin, and high deacetylation degree and medium molecular weight of chitosan. The chitosan films obtained by employing biopolymer subjected to sonication for 15, 25 and 40 min showed high values of luminosity, chromatid and chrome for beef preservation. These characteristics were maintained even after ten days of packaging.
