Inner Co Synergizing Outer Ru Supported on Carbon Nanotubes for Efficient pH-Universal Hydrogen Evolution Catalysis

Jian Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, a highly active and durable multicomponent catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) was developed. The catalyst, consisting of cobalt nanoparticles confined inside bamboo-like carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and ultralow ruthenium loading on the exterior walls, exhibited exceptional HER activity. The atomic-scale structural investigations and theoretical calculations revealed that the confined inner cobalt and loaded outer ruthenium induced charge redistribution and synergistic electron coupling, optimizing the adsorption energy of H intermediates and facilitating electron/mass transfer. The results demonstrated that the Co@CNTs | Ru catalyst achieved top-level catalytic activity among all reported HER catalysts. This work provides new insights for the rational design of carbon-supported metal catalysts for practical applications.

Electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution from water at low overpotentials with cobalt complexes supported by redox-active bipyridyl-NHC donors

Lizhu Chen et al.

Summary: Three cobalt complexes with tunable, redox-active bipyridyl N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-based ligands were studied for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution from aqueous solutions. The macrocyclic complexes showed higher activity compared to their non-macrocyclic counterpart, with the catalyst supported by a 15-membered macrocycle performing the best. The best catalyst, 3-Co, catalyzed H2 evolution with a Faradaic efficiency of 97% at a low overpotential of 330 mV in a pH 4 acetate buffer.

Enhanced single-nanoparticle collisions for the hydrogen evolution reaction in a confined microchannel

Si-Min Lu et al.

Summary: Enhanced near-wall hindered diffusion is introduced to increase the dynamic collision duration of single nanoparticles in the electron tunneling region, leading to improved electrocatalytic performance. Specifically, for single palladium nanoparticle collisions in the hydrogen evolution reaction, hydrodynamic trapping confined in a microchannel effectively activates the reaction on the nanoparticles. The microchannel-based Au ultramicroelectrode shows promise in the application of single NP collisions for energy conversion.

Hierarchical Architectures Based on Ru Nanoparticles/Oxygen-Rich-Carbon Nanotubes for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution

Ruifu Ding et al.

Summary: Highly active and durable electrocatalysts are crucial for producing hydrogen fuel through the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The uniform deposition of Ru nanoparticles interacting with oxygen-rich carbon nanotube architectures (Ru-OCNT) designed through ozonation and hydrothermal approaches exhibit excellent catalytic activity and stability confirmed by density functional theory. Ru-OCNT shows smaller Tafel slope than Ru-CNT and commercial Pt/C in both alkaline and acidic electrolytes, indicating high catalytic activity and fast charge transfer kinetics for hydrogen fuel production.

Manipulating the Coordination Chemistry of Ru-N(O)-C Moieties for Fast Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution Kinetics

Mengmeng Lao et al.

Summary: The coordination chemistry of the Ru-N(O)-C moieties in carbon-supported Ru heterostructured electrocatalysts can be precisely modulated to achieve enhanced electrocatalytic performance in hydrogen evolution reaction. The optimal heterostructured electrocatalyst demonstrates the highest specific activity among reported Ru-based electrocatalysts, surpassing the state-of-the-art Pt/C catalyst in alkaline media. The atomic-level interface engineering of carbon-supported Ru-based heterostructures not only promotes H2O adsorption and dissociation, but also enhances the adsorption behavior of H on metallic Ru species, leading to accelerated hydrogen evolution kinetics in both alkaline and acidic media.
