Does Human Capital Influence Labor Productivity? Evidence from Nigerian Manufacturing and Service Firms

Adamu Jibir et al.

Summary: Human capital is a key element in achieving organizational objectives, and its development is crucial for effectively managing the workforce and ensuring business survival and sustainability. This study analyzed data from Nigerian firms and found that both stocks of and investments in human capital significantly contribute to labor productivity. Skilled workers with higher education levels, general education levels, and workers with high school education were identified as important factors for productivity gains, while absenteeism due to HIV/malaria caused productivity losses. R&D and bonus systems were also significant investments in human capital that led to increased labor productivity.

Agglomeration of the new energy industry and green innovation efficiency: Does the spatial mismatch of R&D resources matter?

Tuochen Li et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the impact of new energy industry agglomeration on green innovation efficiency in China from 2011 to 2019, focusing on the spatial mismatch of research and development (R&D) resources. The study finds that new energy industry agglomeration can significantly enhance green innovation efficiency, with moderate agglomeration having a positive effect and excessive agglomeration obscuring the green innovation effect. The relationship between agglomeration and green innovation efficiency is negatively moderated by R&D resource mismatch and amplified by innovation financial resource mismatch. Moreover, the positive impact of agglomeration on green innovation efficiency has two inflection points when innovation resource mismatch is considered as the threshold variable.

Patent Publication and Innovation

Deepak Hegde et al.

Summary: We measure the impact of patent publication on innovation by studying the American Inventor's Protection Act of 1999 (AIPA), which shortened the time for public disclosure of US patents by approximately 1.5 years. By comparing US patents subject to AIPA with European patents that were not, we find that post-AIPA, US patents receive more and faster follow-on citations, indicating increased technology diffusion. We also observe changes in technological overlap and a decrease in duplicative R&D.

Determinants and spatial spillover of inter-provincial carbon leakage in China: The perspective of economic cycles

Chonghui Zhang et al.

Summary: Measuring and analysing carbon leakage are important for improving environmental responsibility. This study used the origin-destination approach and spatial spillover analysis to explore the factors of China's interprovincial carbon leakage. The results showed the opposite effects of economic development and environmental regulations on carbon leakage. Provinces with high-energy intensity and abundant energy resources were mainly net-exporters of carbon, while provinces with underdeveloped secondary industries were net-importers. Positive spillover effects of energy intensity were found at the origin, and negative effects at the destination.

This research analyzes the relationship between the digital economy, digital talent aggregation (DTA), and green technology innovation (GTI) using data from 30 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions in mainland China from 2011 to 2020. The findings suggest a nonlinear relationship between the digital economy and GTI, with regional heterogeneity effects. The study also highlights the negative moderating effect of DTA on the influence of the digital economy on GTI, as well as the intensified negative spillover effect of the digital economy on local GTI at the spatial level.
