Woodland Management as Major Energy Supply during the Early Industrialization: A Multiproxy Analysis in the Northwest European Lowlands

Claudia Oliveira et al.

Summary: Wood and charcoal were important energy sources during early industrialization in Europe. This study investigated charcoal production in NE France using charcoal and historical sources analysis, along with innovative dating methodologies. The research showed that charcoal production continued until recent times and Carpinus was the dominant taxon in the charcoal assemblage.

Scale-dependent changes in tree diversity over more than a century in eastern Canada: Landscape diversification and regional homogenization

Victor Danneyrolles et al.

Summary: The study found that disturbances related to land use since the 19th century have led to long-term changes in tree diversity in the northern temperate forests of eastern Canada, resulting in increased diversity within landscapes and homogenization at the regional scale. Changes in taxonomic diversity were more pronounced compared to functional diversity, and correlations between environmental variables and diversity increased over time.
