Buoyant fluid injections at high viscosity contrasts in an inclined closed-end pipe

S. Akbari et al.

Summary: This study investigates the buoyant miscible injection of a high-viscosity fluid into a pipe filled with a low-viscosity fluid. Experimental methods such as high-speed camera imaging, ultrasound Doppler velocimetry, planar laser induced fluorescence, and particle image velocimetry are used, along with numerical simulations. The effects of viscosity ratio, Reynolds number, and inclination angle on flow dynamics are analyzed, and the concentration and velocity fields, average front velocity of the heavy fluid, mixing index, and flow regimes are described. The findings show that the front velocity is mainly determined by an inertial-buoyant balance, and a heavy fluid front separation occurs under certain conditions.

Feasibility of periodic stabilizers for extending coiled tubing reach

Johannes Liljenhjerte et al.

Summary: This study investigates the feasibility of using strategically placed periodic supports to increase the buckling stability of coiled tubing (CT) operations. By modifying tubing force analysis (TFA) and finite element analysis (FEA) models, exact locations of supports are determined. Experiments demonstrate that sufficient periodic support maintains its stabilizing integrity beyond the point of helical buckling.

From breakup to coiling and buckling regimes in buoyant viscoplastic injections

S. Akbari et al.

Summary: We investigated the injection flow of a heavy viscoplastic fluid into a light Newtonian fluid through modeling and experiments. Three distinct flow regimes were observed as the injection rate increased, namely the breakup, coiling, and buckling regimes. A lubrication approximation model was developed to classify the flow regimes based on dimensionless flow parameters.

An experimental study of displacement flows in stationary and moving annuli for reverse circulation cementing applications

A. Eslami et al.

Summary: We conducted an experimental study on buoyant displacement flows in vertical narrow annular configurations, simulating the oilfield primary cementing process. We used different fluid proxies with varying rheological behaviors and density contrasts. Our analysis focused on the effects of viscosity ratio, densimetric Froude number, Reynolds number, eccentricity, and reciprocation frequency on the displacement flow patterns and efficiency.

Effect of ocean load on axial force of coiled tubing with different helical post-buckling degrees

Yanfeng Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of ocean load and helical post-buckling configuration on the axial force of coiled tubing through experimental and mechanical analysis. The results show that greater ocean load and helical post-buckling lead to increased axial force fluctuation. Additionally, the pitch transitions from variable pitch to equal pitch with increasing helical post-buckling.

Fluid experiments on the dump bailing method in the plug and abandonment of oil and gas wells

S. Akbari et al.

Summary: This study investigates the placement efficiency and quality of cement plug placement in oil well sealing operations using the dump bailing method. The experimental results show that smaller dumping heights and increased density and viscosity differences can enhance the efficiency of in-situ fluid removal, while a higher injection rate can reduce mixing and placement time.

Evaluating stabilizing initiatives to extend coiled tubing reach

Johannes Liljenhjerte et al.

Summary: This study introduces new numerical strategies that focus on tubing force analysis (TFA) and buckling induced lockup, aiming to increase the critical helical buckling load of coiled tubings (CT) and optimize well utilization by identifying stabilizing initiatives. By evaluating the gain in CT reach from stabilizing initiatives and determining the minimum requirement for optimal application, the strategies presented in this research offer a novel approach to complement existing extended reach technologies and enhance operational efficiency in oil wells.
