Post-disturbance reorganization of forest ecosystems in a changing world

Rupert Seidl et al.

Summary: Forest ecosystems are strongly affected by climate change and disturbance activities. The short time window after a disturbance event plays a crucial role in shaping future forest development. Understanding and predicting forest reorganization through analyzing forest structure and composition is essential for anticipating forest change.

Neighborhood diversity structure and neighborhood species richness effects differ across life stages in a subtropical natural secondary forest

Haonan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of neighborhood diversity structure on species recruitment and survival in subtropical secondary forests. The results show that subtropical secondary forests have a higher proportion of diversity accumulators and a lower proportion of repellers compared to tropical and temperate natural forests, resulting in neighborhood diversity structures that are beneficial for biodiversity maintenance and restoration. The study also finds that the neighborhood diversity structure changes from accumulator-dominated to neutral-dominant with life stage, which determines the direction and strength of neighborhood species richness effects on individual recruitment and mortality.

The competitive mechanism between post-abandonment Chinese fir plantations and rehabilitated natural secondary forest species under an in situ conservation policy

Haonan Zhang et al.

Summary: The ecological processes supporting stable coexistence or competitive elimination mechanisms between post-abandonment plantations and natural secondary forest tree species are poorly understood and may be the decisive ecological processes driving secondary forest restoration. The long-term forest plot in an abandoned Chinese fir plantation in China provided valuable information on spatial survival strategies and species coexistence mechanisms between different tree species during secondary succession. This study suggests that implementing forest recovery programs or protection policies based on post-abandonment monoculture plantations may lead to uncertainties in achieving restoration goals, as it could create difficulties in restoring the forest to its original state.

Priority effects and ecological restoration

Emanuela W. A. Weidlich et al.

Summary: Priority effects refer to how the order of species arrival at a site can impact the establishment, growth, or reproduction of later arriving species. Research has shown that even small delays in arrival time can lead to differences in subsequent community composition and ecosystem functions. However, there is limited understanding of the long-term stability of these effects, and more studies are needed in different ecosystems to fully operationalize the concept for restoration.

Neighbourhood-based evidence of tree diversity promotion by beech in an old-growth deciduous-coniferous mixed forest (Eastern Carpathians)

Dan Gafta et al.

Summary: Neighbourhood models are useful for understanding interactions that maintain tree species diversity in mixed forests. This study in an old-growth forest found that beech saplings act as diversity accumulators, while spruce trees show negative interactions with saplings. Beech promotes tree species coexistence, while spruce leads to lower local tree diversity due to its interspersion pattern.
