Seasonal variation of driving factors of ambient PM2.5 oxidative potential in Shenzhen, China

Chunbo Xing et al.

Summary: In this study, multiple chemical probes were compared to find efficient and complementary oxidative potential (OP) measurements for PM2.5. The effects of different chemical components and emission sources on the OP of PM2.5 were explored, along with their seasonal variations. The combination of OPDTT and OPOH provides an efficient and comprehensive measurement of OP. The findings highlight the importance of long-term, multi-method, multi-component assessment of PM2.5 OP.

Effects of endogenous and exogenous reductants in lung fluid on the bioaccessible metal concentration and oxidative potential of ultrafine particles

Ya-qi Yu et al.

Summary: The health risk posed by ultrafine particles (UFPs) is potentially increased by the reducing substances present in lung fluid, mainly consisting of metals and quinones. The bioaccessible metal concentration and oxidative potential of UFPs were analyzed, and it was found that UFPs containing Mn had higher values than those containing Cu and Fe. Both endogenous and exogenous reductants can increase the bioaccessible metal concentration and oxidative potential, with greater increments observed for composite UFPs. The findings highlight the importance of the bioaccessible metal fraction in UFPs for inducing oxidative stress and provide novel insights into their toxicity and health risks.

Antioxidant therapy reverses sympathetic dysfunction, oxidative stress, and hypertension in male hyperadipose rats

Fernanda Novi Cortegoso Lopes et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the central and peripheral benefits of vitamin C treatment on cardiovascular, autonomic, and oxidative dysfunctions in hyperadipose animals. It suggests that this effect may be achieved through reducing oxidative stress in the central nervous system.

N-acetylcysteine alleviates fine particulate matter (PM2.5)-induced lung injury by attenuation of ROS-mediated recruitment of neutrophils and Ly6Chigh monocytes and lung inflammation

Chieh-Mo Lin et al.

Summary: This study found that PM2.5-induced lung injury is caused by oxidative stress leading to the recruitment of neutrophils and Ly6C(high) monocytes, and production of inflammatory proteins. Treatment with NAC alleviated PM2.5 induced lung injury by attenuating the ROS-mediated recruitment of neutrophils and Ly6C(high) monocytes and lung inflammation.

Particle surface area, ultrafine particle number concentration, and cardiovascular hospitalizations

Shao Lin et al.

Summary: This study found immediate and lasting effects of particle surface area concentration (PSC) on cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and delayed and prolonged impacts of ultrafine particle number concentration (UFPnc). Larger PSC was associated with higher risks of stroke, hypertension, and ischemic heart diseases.

Chemical characteristics and oxidative potential of indoor and outdoor PM2.5 in densely populated urban slums

Abhay Anand et al.

Summary: This study assessed the chemical characteristics and oxidative potential of indoor and outdoor PM2.5 in slums in Mumbai, India. The results showed that the PM2.5 in the slums primarily originated from outdoor sources, and the high-traffic slums had higher toxicity and non-carcinogenic health risk compared to the low-traffic slums.

Comparison of oxidative potential of PM1 and PM2.5 urban aerosol and bioaccessibility of associated elements in three simulated lung fluids

H. Cigankova et al.

Summary: Most elements showed higher bioaccessibility in the submicron fraction compared to the fine size fraction, which also varied between the three simulated lung fluids (SLFs). The bioaccessibility of elements is influenced by their chemical compound and the composition of the solution. The oxidative potential (OP) of urban particulate matter (PM) was found to be significantly affected by the composition of the simulated lung fluids. The correlation between certain elements and DTT activity suggest their involvement in the oxidative activity of PM.

Hydroalkylation of Unactivated Olefins via Visible-Light-Driven Dual Hydrogen Atom Transfer Catalysis

Guangyue Lei et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the radical hydroalkylation of unactivated olefins using visible-light-driven dual HAT catalysis, with catalytic amounts of amine-borane and in situ generated thiol as the hydrogen atom abstractor and donor. Experimental and computational studies support the proposed mechanism, suggesting that hydrogen bonding between the amine-borane and substrates improves reaction efficiency.
