Effect of surface roughness and blade material on the performance of a stationary Savonius wind turbine under different operating conditions

Muhamad Hasfanizam Mat Yazik et al.

Summary: The Savonius wind turbine, a vertical-axis wind turbine invented in the 1930s, features a cylindrical drum and semi-circular blades. It is known for its simple design, low costs, and self-starting ability, making it suitable for rural areas. This study utilized a three-dimensional computer simulation to analyze the performance of a static Savonius turbine at different blade angle positions and considered the effects of surface roughness. The findings highlighted the importance of material selection in turbine blade development to minimize downtime and potentially save costs.

Numerical study of the 3D Savonius turbine under stationary conditions

M. S. Abdullah et al.

Summary: This study investigates the aerodynamics and force-deflection behavior of Savonius turbine blades made from aluminum alloy in static conditions, while considering the influence of turbine size. The results reveal that turbine size and wind speed have a proportional effect on induced stress and blade deformations, but even in the worst case scenario, the outcome is far below the failure limit. The presence of endplates reduces blade deformation and alternating stress, while improving static torque performance.

The role of wake splitter deflector on performance enhancement of Savonius wind turbine

Esmaeel Fatahian et al.

Summary: The Savonius drag-type wind turbine has poor efficiency due to adverse negative torques. This study aims to improve its performance by using a cylinder deflector with a wake splitter plate to manage the wake zone behind the deflector. Computational Fluid Dynamics simulation was conducted to investigate the effect of various parameters on the turbine's output. The results showed that the cylinder deflector with the wake splitter significantly increased the turbine's performance.

Sediment and Cavitation Erosion in Francis Turbines-Review of Latest Experimental and Numerical Techniques

Adnan Aslam Noon et al.

Summary: The study discusses the sediment and cavitation erosion issues in hydroelectric power turbine components in the Himalayas and Andes, highlighting the importance of flow characteristics, surface properties, and material characteristics in erosion. It also emphasizes the potential benefits of design optimization tools, coalesced effect of sediment and cavitation erosion, and well-conducted experiments for erosion reduction. The limited availability of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) work in this area is recognized as a gap in research that could provide valuable insights for future practitioners and researchers.

Experimental investigation on the characterization of self-starting capability of a 3-bladed Savonius hydrokinetic turbine using deflector plates

Mohd Badrul Salleh et al.

Summary: The study found that deflectors have a significant impact on the self-starting capability and power performance of the turbine, especially when the returning blade deflector angle is 90 degrees. The optimal configuration is with an advancing blade deflector angle of 75 degrees and a returning blade deflector angle of 90 degrees, achieving a power coefficient of 0.183, which is also the best deflector configuration for improving self-starting characteristics.

High-resolution numerical simulation of the performance of vertical axis wind turbines in urban area: Part I, wind turbines on the side of single building

Wenhao Xu et al.

Summary: The feasibility of installing vertical axis wind turbines on the side of buildings was verified using a high-resolution numerical method. The study showed that wind turbines in specific flow regions can significantly increase energy output, and optimizing the arrangement of multiple wind turbines around the building can improve overall energy output. Through changing the rotational directions of the wind turbines, the energy output of all turbines can be enhanced.
