Au@Cu2O core@shell nanocrystals as sustainable catalysts for efficient hydrogen production from ammonia borane

Mei-Jing Fang et al.

Summary: Au@Cu2O core@shell nanocrystals are demonstrated to be sustainable catalysts for efficient hydrogen production from ammonia borane (AB). By leveraging the core@shell structure and electronic interactions, Au@Cu2O shows remarkable performance in AB hydrolysis. The effect of shell thickness on hydrogen production and dehydrogenation of AB is investigated systematically. The research findings not only expand the family of metal/metal oxide composite catalysts for AB hydrolysis but also deepen the understanding of core@shell structural features and electronic interactions in AB dehydrogenation.

Cobalt-Promoted Noble-Metal Catalysts for Efficient Hydrogen Generation from Ammonia Borane Hydrolysis

Yali Meng et al.

Summary: A step-by-step reduction strategy was developed to synthesize small-sized bimetallic species supported on various metal oxide supports. The introduction of Co species significantly enhanced the catalytic activity of noble metals (e.g., Pt, Rh, Ru, and Pd) in ammonia borane hydrolysis reactions. The optimized Pt0.1%Co3%/TiO2 catalyst showed a high turnover frequency (TOF) value and outperformed monometallic Pt/TiO2 and commercial Pt/C catalysts in terms of H2 generation rate and stability.

Emerging Era of Electrolyte Solvation Structure and Interfacial Model in Batteries

Haoran Cheng et al.

Summary: Recent research has shown that not only the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer but also the metal-ion solvation structure and interfacial model in the electrolyte significantly affect the performance of lithium-ion batteries. In this paper, the authors summarize recent studies on the importance of electrolyte solvation structure, develop a quantitative model, and propose an interfacial model to understand the electrode's performance. These findings may lead to a new era beyond the SEI and have implications for the design and improvement of LIBs.

Sustainable Hydrogen Production from Water Splitting on a Co3O4@LaCoO3 Core-Shell Redox Catalyst

Hyun Suk Lim et al.

Summary: This study investigates a core-shell structured Co3O4@LaCoO3 redox catalyst for hydrogen production through chemical looping water splitting. The catalyst improves H2O splitting efficiency by lowering the kinetic barrier and increasing the exothermicity, and enhances H-2 production activity by covering the Co3O4 nanoparticle surface. The core-shell structure prevents aggregation of Co3O4 nanoparticles and leads to superior and sustainable H-2 productivity compared to using only Co3O4 or LaCoO3.

DFT simulation of interfacial interaction of graphene/SiO2 composites

Changhua Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the first-principle density functional theory (DFT) method was used to investigate the interfacial interaction and electronic properties of graphene on beta-cristobalite SiO2 surface. The results showed that the Si-terminated beta-cristobalite SiO2 substrate exhibits a strong chemical covalent interaction with graphene, while the hydroxylated SiO2 surface only shows weak van der Waals interaction with graphene. The presence of interlayer water molecules between graphene and SiO2 reduces the adhesion energy for the graphene/SiO2 composites. The study also found that the surface polarity of SiO2 and the interfacial water geometry have an impact on the electronic properties of graphene.
