Young people's help-giving actions towards a peer with a mental health problem: A systematic review and narrative synthesis

Aruni Subasinghe et al.

Summary: This study reviewed the literature on young people's help-giving actions towards peers with mental health problems and identified some gaps and issues. The most commonly reported help-giving themes were encouraging professional and adult support and providing emotional support. Although there were limited studies on online help-giving, online settings facilitated immediate help despite time or location constraints. The quality of help-giving improved after training, but the ability to provide help during mental health crises was still poor.

Summary: This study examined the utilization and acceptability of different types of support accessed by secondary school students in the south of England following self-harm. The results showed that over a third of students did not seek any help after self-harm, and most of those who did not seek help did not find it to be a helpful coping strategy. Further research is needed to explore ways to overcome barriers to help-seeking among adolescents who self-harm and improve the perceived helpfulness of the supports accessed.
