Whistler-mode chorus waves at Mars

Shangchun Teng et al.

Summary: Chorus waves are electromagnetic emissions in space that can produce highly energetic electrons. This study provides direct evidence, based on observations of chorus at Mars and Earth, showing that the chirping rate of chorus is consistently related to the background magnetic field inhomogeneity.

Whistler-mode chorus waves at Mars

Shangchun Teng et al.

Summary: This study provides direct evidence using observations from Mars and Earth that the chirping rate of chorus waves is consistently related to the background magnetic field inhomogeneity, despite differences in the magnitude of the inhomogeneity parameter at the two planets. The results confirm the connection between the chirping rate and magnetic field inhomogeneity, opening the door to controlled plasma wave excitation in the laboratory and space.

A Theoretical Framework of Chorus Wave Excitation

F. Zonca et al.

Summary: We propose a self-consistent theoretical framework to describe the evolution of chorus wave excitation and derive the expression for chorus chirping rate. Our study shows that chorus chirping corresponds to the maximization of wave-particle power exchange and different interpretations of chorus chirping can be reconciled within this framework.

Ducted Chorus Waves Cause Sub-Relativistic and Relativistic Electron Microbursts

Nonlinear Electron Phase-Space Dynamics in Spontaneous Excitation of Falling-Tone Chorus

Yifan Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, the electron phase space dynamics in a spontaneously generated falling tone chorus with a parabolic type magnetic field were investigated. The formation and evolution of electron phase space clump and the variation of frequency chirping rate caused by the movement of the source region were demonstrated. The results are consistent with the Trap-Release-Amplify model and provide insights into the mechanism of chorus frequency chirping.

A Trap-Release-Amplify Model of Chorus Waves

Xin Tao et al.

Summary: Whistler mode chorus waves show frequency chirping and various models have been proposed to explain this phenomenon. The Trap-Release-Amplify (TaRA) model, proposed in this study, suggests that nonlinear wave particle interactions form phase space structures of correlated electrons which lead to frequency chirping. The model unifies previous results and explains fine structures of chorus waves.
