Virtually the Same? Evaluating the Effectiveness of Remote Undergraduate Research Experiences

Riley A. Hess et al.

Summary: In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced undergraduate research experiences (UREs) to be conducted remotely. This raised concerns about the potential lack of scientific integration and negative perceptions of research. To address these concerns, a study was conducted on students who participated in remote life science URE programs in Summer 2020. The study found that students experienced gains in scientific self-efficacy, but the potential for scientific integration was limited.

Gains in Scientific Identity, Scientific Self-Efficacy, and Career Intent Distinguish Upper-Level CUREs from Traditional Experiences in the Classroom

MiKayla J. Newell et al.

Summary: Attrition from the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) pipeline limits the number of graduates needed to meet STEM workforce demand and impedes efforts to diversify the workforce. The current study found that participation in course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE) can significantly increase students' scientific self-efficacy, scientific identity, and career intent, highlighting the importance of prioritizing scientific identity in STEM curricula to improve workforce diversity and increase the number of STEM graduates.

Development of a Broadly Accessible, Computationally Guided Biochemistry Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experience

Ashley Vater et al.

Summary: Including undergraduate research in STEM education is a high-impact practice that can be scaled more easily by integrating experiences into the classroom. The new biochemistry Course-based Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE) connects students to a worldwide community of protein modeling software developers and has shown positive effects on psychosocial developments associated with STEM persistence. The design of the CURE's curriculum, resources, and instructor materials aim to facilitate widespread implementation and growth.
