Autogenous self-healing of ultra-high-performance fiber-reinforced concrete with varying silica fume dosages: Secondary hydration and structural regeneration

Qiaomu Zheng et al.

Summary: Secondary hydration is the main driving force for autogenous self-healing, influencing crack closure in damaged cementitious materials. In fiber-reinforced cement composites, secondary hydration also plays a crucial role in regenerating the fiber-matrix interface. Silica fume (SF) addition, as an important factor in cement hydration, significantly affects the self-healing performance of cementitious materials and composites. This study investigated the impact of SF on the autogenous self-healing of ultra-high-performance fiber-reinforced concrete. The addition of >= 20% SF accelerated secondary hydration in the cement matrix surrounding cracks, leading to the dissolution of amorphous silica and the formation of Si-containing healing phases. SF addition also enhanced the regeneration of the fiber-matrix interface by promoting the growth of self-healing products in these areas, contributing to crack closure and restoration of flexural properties.

Effect of saturation degree on chloride transport in mortars under two conditions: diffusion and continuous immersion

Lin Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the transport of chloride ions in mortars with different saturation degrees. The relationship between the relative chloride diffusion coefficient and initial saturation degree is established, and a numerical model for simulating chloride transport is proposed. The results of this research contribute to a better understanding of chloride transport in concrete and have important implications for durability assessment and service life prediction.

Pervious concrete: effects of porosity on permeability and strength

Leo Gu Li et al.

Summary: The study found that the interconnected porosity is the main factor determining water permeability, while open porosity and water/cement ratio together govern compressive strength. Adjusting water/cement ratio and paste volume can improve the performance of pervious concrete.

Magnesium Sulfate (MgSO4) Attack and Chloride Isothermal Effects on the Self-consolidating Concrete Containing Metakaolin and Zeolite

Kianoosh Samimi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanical and durability properties of self-consolidating concrete (SCC) with fine sand as filler and two types of pozzolan, metakaolin and zeolite. Zeolite, despite its strong pozzolanic activity, results in lower compressive strength compared to other SC. However, it enhances resistance to chloride ions penetration and MgSO4 attack compared to SCC with metakaolin.

Characterizing fiber reinforced concrete incorporating zeolite and metakaolin as natural pozzolans

Farshad Dabbaghi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of different amounts of metakaolin and zeolite pozzolans on the mechanical properties and durability of concrete containing polypropylene fibers. The results indicate that polypropylene fibers were more effective in enhancing mechanical properties in the zeolite mixtures. The AFM analysis, UPV, density, and permeable voids test results revealed that FRC mixtures incorporating natural zeolite had the most dense microstructure and the least porosity and defects among all examined mixtures.
