Diversity and geographical distribution of Leishmania species and the emergence of Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum and L. (Viannia) panamensis in Central-Western Venezuela

Lourdes A. Delgado-Noguera et al.

Summary: Transmission of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Venezuela reveals diverse and changing epidemiological landscapes, with Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis identified as the main cause. Central-western Venezuela is a high endemic region for the disease, with a pattern of species occurrence including Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum as an etiologic agent of cutaneous leishmaniasis. The study calls for future research on the ecological intricacies and transmission aspects of leishmaniasis to implement effective prevention and control strategies.

Summary: By analyzing blood samples and triatomine specimens from Venezuela, it was found that the infection rate of T. cruzi in humans and mammals was high, while the infection rates of T. rangeli and Leishmania spp. were low. It is worth noting that the co-infection of T. cruzi/T. rangeli was reported for the first time in humans, dogs, cows, and Tamandua tetradactyla from Venezuela.

Summary: This study used amplicon-based next-generation sequencing to identify visceral leishmaniasis (VL) aetiologic species in clinical samples. The results revealed co-infections of different Leishmania species in VL patients, highlighting the importance of understanding the biological, clinical, and epidemiological implications. The methodology used in this study demonstrates its potential usefulness in detecting trypanosomatid coinfections.

Epidemiological and diagnostic aspects of feline leishmaniasis with emphasis on Brazil: a narrative review

Luiz F. J. Nascimento et al.

Summary: Feline leishmaniasis (FeL) is now considered an emerging disease in Brazil, with an estimated prevalence of 8% and Leishmania infantum being the most prevalent species. Cats infected with Leishmania typically show skin lesions, mainly in the cephalic region, and diagnosis is primarily conducted through serological tools. However, further research is needed on the immune response and diagnostic methods for FeL in cats.

Summary: The predominant species causing cutaneous leishmaniasis in Panama is Leishmania (Viannia) panamensis, with other species circulating to a lesser degree. The presence of genetic variants and hybrid isolates suggests implications for the epidemiology and clinical follow-up of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Panama. No evidence of parasites from the Leishmania (Leishmania) mexicana complex was found in this study in Panama.
