Early Childhood Providers' Perceptions of Effective Professional Development Components A Qualitative Study

Danika Pfeiffer et al.

Summary: There is a research-to-practice gap in early childhood care and education (ECCE) settings regarding evidence-based practices (EBPs) for children with developmental disabilities (DD). The lack of training among ECCE providers hinders their ability to support these children's learning. A professional development program, Early Achievements for Child Care Providers (EA-CP PD), was implemented to train center-based providers in inclusive ECCE classrooms to deliver differentiated instruction using EBPs for children with DD. Post-PD focus groups revealed that job-embedded coaching benefited providers in implementing instructional strategies and enhancing children's social-communication and language development. Providers expressed the need for more involvement from ECCE directors. Implications are discussed for involving directors in providers' professional development to enhance implementation and improve child outcomes.

Assessing Generalization During Professional Development in Child Care: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial

Danika L. Pfeiffer et al.

Summary: This study examined the effects of the Early Achievements for Child Care Providers professional development program on child care providers and children. The results showed that incorporating generalization training into the program can enhance providers' implementation fidelity, but a short interval of implementation may have limited impact on child outcomes. The researchers suggest that providers' perceptions should be taken into account when designing professional development programs to improve the feasibility of generalization training.

Early childhood Special education teachers' self-efficacy in relation to individual children: Links to children's literacy learning

Ying Guo et al.

Summary: This study examined the differences in self-efficacy of early childhood special education (ECSE) teachers when teaching children with and without disabilities, as well as when teaching children with different types of disabilities. The results showed that teachers felt less self-efficacious when working with children with disabilities, especially those with autism spectrum disorder. Teacher self-efficacy towards individual children was found to be a significant predictor of children's print knowledge, while children's disability status did not moderate these relationships.
