Influence of maternal age on birth and infant outcomes at 6 months: a cohort study with quantitative bias analysis

Elisabeth Gebreegziabher et al.

Summary: This study found that maternal age has an impact on infant birth outcomes and mortality. Babies born to adolescent mothers had lower weight at birth and lower anthropometric measures at baseline, but showed similar growth outcomes from enrollment to 6 months. However, they had a higher odds of all-cause mortality by 6 months compared to babies born to adult mothers. These findings suggest that delaying first birth from adolescence to adulthood may improve birth outcomes and reduce neonatal mortality.

Effect of the interaction between advanced maternal age and pre-pregnancy BMI on pre-eclampsia and GDM in Central China

Mengting Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigated the independent and combined effects of advanced maternal age and pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) on the risk of pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The results showed that both advanced maternal age and pre-pregnancy overweight/obesity were associated with an increased risk of pre-eclampsia and GDM. Furthermore, pre-pregnancy BMI mediated the associations between maternal age and the development of pre-eclampsia and GDM.

Grouping women of South Asian ethnicity for pregnancy research in New Zealand

Esti De Graaff et al.

Summary: This study aims to identify appropriate groupings of women of South Asian ethnicity for perinatal research. By comparing socio-demographic risk profiles and pregnancy outcomes among different ethnic groups, similarities were observed among women of Indian, Fijian Indian, South African Indian, Sri Lankan, Bangladeshi, and Pakistani ethnicities. It is recommended that researchers understand the risk profiles of participants before aggregating groups in research to mitigate risks associated with masking differences.

Advanced maternal age and adverse pregnancy outcomes

Alexander P. Frick

Summary: Advanced maternal age is associated with a wide range of adverse pregnancy outcomes, including increased risks for miscarriage, chromosomal abnormalities, stillbirth, and preterm birth. However, varying definitions in both maternal age and reported outcomes can make it difficult to provide accurate counseling to individual women about their specific risks. It is important to clarify the magnitude of these risks in order to provide more informed clinical counseling and decision-making for pregnant women of advanced maternal age.
