Influence of microstructure on the micro-region fracture toughness of the 30Cr2Ni4MoV turbine rotor welded joint

Yang Guo et al.

Summary: The fracture toughness of different micro-regions in a 30Cr2Ni4MoV steam turbine rotor welded joint was investigated. The research analyzed the microstructure, fracture morphologies, and cracking paths using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscope. The results showed that the fracture toughness of the weld metal was lower and non-uniform compared to the base metal and heat-affected zones (HAZ). The fracture toughness was influenced by the microstructure, with TIG and SAW-C having the worst fracture toughness due to their composition of columnar tempered bainite, intergranular tempered lath martensite, and carbides. In contrast, SAW-Z exhibited good fracture toughness with zigzag columnar tempered bainite and equiaxed granular tempered bainite. CGHAZ and FGHAZ had the best fracture toughness with equiaxed tempered martensite. The fracture modes varied, with SAW-C and TIG showing brittle cleavage fracture, while SAW-Z, FGHAZ, CGHAZ, and BM exhibiting ductile fracture. The crack propagation process differed based on microstructure, with crack propagation influenced by the presence of tempered bainite or dimples in the lower strength micro-regions.

Effect of microstructure on slip-induced crack initiation and early propagation of martensitic steel during high cycle fatigue

Yajun Dai et al.

Summary: The multi-scaled microstructure of martensitic steel significantly affects the initiation and early propagation of cracks. Micro cracks first occur in the slip bands inside the single crystal laths, then coalesce through the lath boundaries, and finally propagate slowly in neighboring grains.

Roles of in-plane and out-of-plane T-stresses in crack tip plastic zones and fracture toughness under mixed mode I/II loading

Xingling Huang

Summary: A new analytical solution for plastic zone size is proposed for mixed mode I/II cracks using the von Mises yield criterion, and the theoretical relationship between plastic zone size and in-plane and out-of-plane T-stresses is determined. Three constraint parameters are derived from plastic zone sizes and area, and the influences of T-stresses and mode mixity on plastic zones are investigated. The combined effects of in-plane and out-of-plane T-stresses on fracture toughness are analyzed, and linear correlations between constraint parameters and fracture toughness are observed.

Slip-driven and weld pore assisted fatigue crack nucleation in electron beam welded TC17 titanium alloy joint

Hanqing Liu et al.

Summary: The crack initiation mechanism of TC17 alloy joints with heterogeneous microstructures was studied under stress ratio of 0.1, revealing the impact of slip deformation in beta grains and cracking of coarse grain boundaries. The average diameter of intergranular welding pores related to VHCF crack nucleation is measured to be around 36 μm, with a driving force of -1.66 MPa·m(1/2) governing the transition from HCF to VHCF.

Effects of local microstructure on crack initiation in super martensitic stainless steel under very-high-cycle fatigue

Xue Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of local microstructure on the crack initiation behavior of a super martensitic stainless steel in the very high cycle fatigue regime. Results show that non-inclusion-induced crack initiation dominates, with fatigue cracks initiating from martensite boundaries forming slip areas. The size and orientation of martensite lath affect the morphology of slip areas but have limited influence on the formation of fine granular areas at the fracture surface.

Mechanism of subsurface microstructural fatigue crack initiation during high and very-high cycle fatigue of advanced bainitic steels

Guhui Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fatigue crack initiation behavior of advanced bainitic steels during high cycle fatigue/very high cycle fatigue regimes and the role of retained austenite in crack initiation and propagation. The study identifies multiple micro-mechanisms responsible for fatigue crack initiation and discusses the formation of fine grains that assist crack advancement. The findings provide insights into the cyclic response of multiphase structures and the mechanisms of fatigue crack initiation during very high cycle fatigue.

Cyclic deformation response of austenitic Ni-based alloy: Mechanical behavior, internal stress evolution and microstructural feature

Ning Wang et al.

Summary: The cyclic deformation response of an austenitic Ni-based alloy was investigated through strain cycling tests at different temperatures. The effects of strain amplitude/ratio and ambient temperature on cyclic deformation behavior were discussed. The results showed that at room temperature, cyclic hardening/softening was mainly attributed to changes in back stress, while at 350 degrees C, the contribution of effective stress became important due to the occurrence of dynamic strain aging.

Mode I and mode II stress intensity factors and dislocation density behaviour in strain gradient plasticity

V Shlyannikov et al.

Summary: This study evaluates crack tip dislocation density behavior and the effect of material plastic properties and intrinsic material length on non-linear amplitude factors using mechanism-based strain gradient plasticity theory. The study examines two planar stress-strain states under pure mode I and pure mode II loading conditions. By implementing a material model based on Taylor's dislocation model in a FE software package, the study determines the effects of fracture mode and stress-strain state on dislocation density distributions at crack tips.

Crack initiation and propagation from geometric microdefects: Experiment and transition fatigue behavior

Keke Tang et al.

Summary: This study investigates short fatigue crack initiation and propagation induced by geometric microdefects, analyzing microstructural influences on crack growth behavior and employing an empirical multiscale model to predict the crack propagation of alloys. The variation in grain size reflects the main microstructural contribution to short crack propagation, with a defined alpha factor demonstrating the transition from microstructurally short crack to physically short crack stages. The results show a decrease in the transition factor with increasing average grain size, and the empirical approach is validated through various fatigue experimental data of alloys like Ti-6Al-4V, 2024-T3, and GH4169.

Summary: The relationship between microstructure, shape memory behavior, and mechanical properties of a hot-rolled Fe-17Mn-5Si-5Cr-4Ni-1Ti-0.3C alloy was investigated. It was found that nano-sized TiC facilitates stress-induced phase transformations, and the alloy already contains nano-sized TiC in the as-rolled state without aging heat treatment.
