Building the Environmental Chemical-Protein Interaction Network (eCPIN): An Exposome-Wide Strategy for Bioactive Chemical Contaminant Identification

Yufeng Gong et al.

Summary: Advancements in nontargeted analysis have allowed for the detection of multiple chemical contaminants. However, environmental toxicology approaches are lacking, impeding the transition to health risk assessment. A protein-guided approach called APNA has been developed to screen bioactive chemical contaminants at the exposome-wide level. This approach utilizes a tagged functional protein to isolate and identify contaminants, leading to the discovery of new ligands and protein targets. A proposed framework, eCPIN, aims to establish a comprehensive map of interactions between chemical contaminants and human proteins to facilitate screening and identification at a proteome-wide level.

Phthalate Esters in Tap Water, Southern Thailand: Daily Exposure and Cumulative Health Risk in Infants, Lactating Mothers, Pregnant and Nonpregnant Women

Kingsley Ezechukwu Okpara et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence and fate of six PAEs in raw and tap water samples from waterworks in Songkhla Province, Thailand. The results showed poor PAEs removal efficiency in the conventional treatment process. The daily intake of PAEs through tap water was found to be low and negligible risk was observed for noncarcinogenic and antiandrogenic effects. However, infants were found to be more vulnerable to cumulative risk.

Discovery of contaminants with antagonistic activity against retinoic acid receptor in house dust

Yingting Jia et al.

Summary: This study identified chemicals with RAR alpha activity in house dust using a His-RAR alpha pull-down assay combined with high-resolution mass spectrometry. Triphenyl phosphate, galaxolidone, DEHP, TEHP, and tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate were confirmed to be RAR alpha ligands, with BEHPP, DEHP, and TEHP identified for the first time as RAR alpha antagonists.

Triphenyl phosphate delayed pubertal timing and induced decline of ovarian reserve in mice as an estrogen receptor antagonist

Haojia Ma et al.

Summary: The study found that TPhP delayed puberty timing in mice and affected ovarian function, possibly by inhibiting estrogen receptor signaling. After 40 days of exposure to TPhP, a significant decrease in the number of follicles was observed in mice, indicating a decline in ovarian reserve.

Surveillance of plasticizers, bisphenol A, steroids and caffeine in surface water of River Ganga and Sundarban wetland along the Bay of Bengal: occurrence, sources, estrogenicity screening and ecotoxicological risk assessment

Paromita Chakraborty et al.

Summary: The study revealed the presence of endocrine disrupting compounds in water samples from the River Ganga and Sundarban wetland, with potential ecotoxicological risks for fish and potential impacts on human health. The sites with sewer outfalls in the middle stretch of the River Ganga were identified as potential hotspots for further monitoring and intervention.

The Impact of Estrogen and Estrogen-Like Molecules in Neurogenesis and Neurodegeneration: Beneficial or Harmful?

Felipe A. Bustamante-Barrientos et al.

Summary: Estrogens and estrogen-like molecules have a significant impact on the biology of various cell types, with estrogen receptors playing a crucial role in modulating cell proliferation, differentiation, and survival, particularly in the central nervous system. Estrogens can exert neuroprotective roles, regulate the balance between proliferation and differentiation of neural stem/progenitor cells, and influence neurogenesis through multiple mechanisms.

Estrogen Receptors in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Xue-Ling Xu et al.

Summary: Female infertility is mainly caused by ovulation disorders, with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) being the most prevalent. PCOS is associated with abnormal function of estrogen and estrogen receptors (ERs), affecting cellular activities. Selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) like tamoxifen and clomiphene have shown clinical applications for subfertility with PCOS, but further understanding of the role of ER in PCOS is needed.

Seasonal distribution and ecological risks of phthalic acid esters in surface water of Taihu Lake, China

Xin Luo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence, spatial distribution, and ecological risks of 16 PAEs in Taihu Lake during different seasons. Results showed that aside from the priority PAEs, other congeners also posed significant contamination and risks. Seasonal variation influenced PAE concentrations, with higher levels in the wet season and significant positive correlations with rainfall, water reserves, and water levels.
