Complex multiple introductions drive fall armyworm invasions into Asia and Australia

Rahul Rane et al.

Summary: The fall armyworm, a notorious agricultural pest, has rapidly spread from West Africa to East Asia since 2016. Genome analysis revealed that the majority of populations in this study were hybrids of C- and R-strains. The spread of the fall armyworm was facilitated by international trade of live/fresh plants and plant products, as well as the establishment of "bridgehead populations" in neighboring countries.

Impact of egg mass layers and scale thicknesses of the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), on the parasitic performance of Trichogrammatoidea bactrae (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae)

Hend O. Mohamed et al.

Summary: Fall armyworm (FAW) is an invasive pest that poses a threat to maize and other economic crops. This research focuses on finding an effective and environmentally-friendly approach to control FAW, as it has developed resistance to most chemical insecticides. The study evaluates the impact of physical barriers, such as egg mass layers and scales' thicknesses, on the parasitic performance of the egg-parasitoid species Trichogrammatoidea bactrae. The results show that T. bactrae is able to parasitize exposed FAW egg masses, with the highest parasitism rate observed in one-layer and two-layer egg masses. Furthermore, the efficacy of FAW-produced adult wasps on the next generation is also determined. The findings suggest that T. bactrae can be an efficient bio-control agent against FAW.
