Andalusian university students' perception of their European identity: international orientation and experiences

Maria del Carmen Mendez Garcia et al.

Summary: Multicultural European societies demand internationally oriented citizens, with education playing a key role in fostering civic values, multicultural attitudes, and plurilingual competences in young people. The university years are crucial for the development of supranational identity, with pan-European study programs such as Erasmus+ aiming to inspire a sense of European citizenship and identity. Research on Andalusian university students' understanding of European identity reveals a general awareness of commonalities across Europe and a utilitarian outlook on the EU, though a clear discernment of its institutions or a marked European identity may be lacking.
