Small-Caliber Vascular Grafts Engineered from Decellularized Leaves and Cross-Linked Gelatin

Nicole Gorbenko et al.

Summary: Due to the prevalence of coronary heart disease in the United States, there is a high demand for small-caliber vascular grafts for coronary bypass surgery. This study evaluates the use of decellularized plant leaves as potential candidates for small-diameter vascular grafts with suitable mechanical properties and recellularization potential. The results show that decellularized leatherleaf viburnum and cross-linked gelatin have the potential to generate small-diameter vascular grafts that are cost effective, readily available, capable of recellularization, and possess suitable mechanical properties.

Development of pro-angiogenic wound dressings from 2-deoxy-D-ribose (2dDR)-loaded decellularized plant leaves

Serkan Dikici et al.

Summary: We successfully fabricated a novel functionalized biomaterial combining decellularized plant tissues with a promising pro-angiogenic agent. Our results demonstrated that 2dDR-loaded decellularized spinach leaves can promote the bioactivity of human endothelial cells in vitro, indicating great potential to be used as a bioactive wound dressing to promote angiogenesis and wound healing.

Summary: Extrusion-based printing enables simplified and economic manufacturing of surgical guides for oral implant placement. The cytotoxicity of two materials, biocopolyester (BE) and polypropylene (PP), intended for printing surgical guides, was evaluated. The results show that all evaluated materials are biocompatible for short-term application, but long-term contact with ME may induce inflammatory and apoptotic responses.

Optimization of Cellulosic Fiber Extraction from Parsley Stalks and Utilization as Filler in Composite Biobased Films

Hulya Cakmak et al.

Summary: This study focuses on optimizing the alkali extraction process of lignocellulosic fiber from parsley stalks. The extracted fiber is used as a filler in composite films. The optimal extraction conditions were determined as 2% alkali concentration, sample:alkali ratio of 0.0276, and extraction temperature of 40 degrees C. The addition of the optimized extract improved the water vapor permeability and optical properties of the composite films.
