Effect of Equatorial Ligand Substitution on the Reactivity with Proteins of Paddlewheel Diruthenium Complexes: Structural Studies

Aaron Teran et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the reaction between [Ru2Cl(D-p-FPhF)(O2CCH3)3] and lysozyme forms adducts with the coordination of Asp side chains. The findings provide valuable insights into the reactivity of diruthenium complexes with proteins, offering useful information for the development of novel artificial diruthenium-containing metalloenzymes with potential applications in catalysis, biomedicine, and biotechnology.

High Stabilization of Low Valency in a Homoleptic ortho-Hydroxybenzoate-bridged Paddlewheel Diruthenium(II,II) Complex

Wataru Kosaka et al.

Summary: A new palladium complex, [Ru-2(o-OHPhCO2)(4)(THF)(2)], was synthesized and characterized. The complex consists of two palladium atoms bridged by ortho-hydroxybenzoate and tetrahydrofuran ligands. The use of different hydroxybenzoate ligands resulted in the formation of different oxidation states, [Ru2(II,III)]. In one of the complexes, the formation of intramolecular hydrogen bonds stabilized the [Ru2(II,II)] species significantly.

Role of intramolecular hydrogen bonding in the redox chemistry of hydroxybenzoate-bridged paddlewheel diruthenium(II, II) complexes

Wataru Kosaka et al.

Summary: The synthesis of a series of trans-heteroleptic paddlewheel diruthenium(II, II) complexes with various hydroxy-substituted benzoate ligands is reported. The redox properties are linearly dependent on the acidity of the OH-substituted benzoic acids, but do not depend on the number of ortho-substituted hydroxy groups. The unexpected electron-withdrawing character of the o-OH groups could be attributed to the direct effect of intramolecular hydrogen bonding on the charge density on the carboxylate oxygen.

A metal-organic framework that exhibits CO2-induced transitions between paramagnetism and ferrimagnetism

Jun Zhang et al.

Summary: A CO2-responsive magnetic MOF has been developed in this study, which converts from ferrimagnetic to paramagnetic on CO2 adsorption, and returns to the ferrimagnetic state on CO2 desorption. This magnetic phase change, along with modifications to the electronic conductivity and permittivity of the MOF, are electronically stabilized by guest CO2 molecules accommodated in the framework.

Spontaneous N2 formation by a diruthenium complex enables electrocatalytic and aerobic oxidation of ammonia

Michael J. Trenerry et al.

Summary: The study presents a stable metal-metal complex that produces dinitrogen from ammonia at low temperatures without the need for exogenous oxidizing reagents or high potentials. It also acts as a redox mediator for the oxidation of ammonia, operating at potentials as low as -255 mV and below the potential for the oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline conditions, showing thermodynamic viability for future development of DAFCs.

Magnet Creation by Guest Insertion into a Paramagnetic Charge-Flexible Layered Metal-Organic Framework

Jun Zhang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the transformation of nonmagnetic materials to spontaneous magnets through chemical modification, based on the adsorbed guest molecule. The magnetic phase can be altered to either a ferrimagnet or an antiferromagnet, depending on the guest molecule accommodated. This represents a significant advancement in materials science research.

Charge Manipulation in Metal-Organic Frameworks: Toward Designer Functional Molecular Materials

Hitoshi Miyasaka

Summary: Multi-dimensional coordination frameworks with controllable charge states offer fascinating targets for the design of electronic/magnetic functional materials. D/A metal-organic frameworks can be designed by assembling electron donor and electron acceptor units with electronically conjugated linkages, allowing precise tuning of charge distribution between internal subunits by varying their electronic structure. The diverse charge states, anisotropic framework, and porous nature of D/A-MOFs are correlated with their bulk electronic and magnetic properties.
