Use of period analysis to provide a timely assessment of 5-year relative survival for pancreatic cancer patients from Taizhou, eastern China

Ye Lu et al.

Summary: Using period analysis, the study assessed the long-term survival rates of pancreatic cancer patients in Taizhou city, China. The 5-year relative survival rate from 2014 to 2018 was 18.9% overall, with 14.7% for men and 23.3% for women. Survival rates varied across different age groups and regions. The study provides essential evidence for the prevention and intervention of pancreatic cancer.

Emerging Novel Therapeutic Approaches for Treatment of Advanced Cutaneous Melanoma

Francesca Comito et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the current research areas for the treatment of metastatic or unresectable advanced cutaneous melanoma, including immune checkpoint inhibitors, cell therapy, vaccines, targeted therapy, and combination strategies. While preliminary efficacy data from early phase trials are available in some areas, confirmation in larger patient cohorts is needed. Understanding the biological effects of the molecules and identifying predictive biomarkers remain crucial for selecting patient populations most likely to benefit from novel emerging treatment strategies.

Molecular Pathology of Skin Melanoma: Epidemiology, Differential Diagnostics, Prognosis and Therapy Prediction

Jozsef Timar et al.

Summary: Similar to other malignancies, genomic studies on skin melanoma have provided a foundation for molecular classification and diagnosis. However, the development of targeted therapies for melanoma has been limited, with BRAF inhibitors being the major breakthrough, while immune checkpoint inhibitors have shown outstanding efficacy.

The Current State of Treatment and Future Directions in Cutaneous Malignant Melanoma

Madison Ernst et al.

Summary: Malignant melanoma is the leading cause of death among cutaneous malignancies. The introduction of immunotherapies and targeted therapies have contributed to a small decrease in mortality rate. However, toxicity and resistance remain critical challenges in the field.

The impact of demographics, socioeconomics, and health care access on melanoma outcomes

Jose L. Cortez et al.

Summary: Melanoma care in the United States faces disparities in providers, patient demographics, residence, insurance, socioeconomic factors, race/ethnicity, and age, impacting outcomes. Melanomas detected by dermatologists tend to be thinner, at an earlier stage, and have better survival rates. Lower socioeconomic status, race/ethnicity, and residence can lead to late-stage melanomas with worse outcomes.

Not all melanomas are created equal: a review and call for more research into nodular melanoma

C. Dessinioti et al.

Summary: Nodular melanoma (NM) is a major contributor to thicker and fatal melanomas, associated with melanoma-specific death in thin tumors, highlighting an important subgroup known as 'aggressive thin' melanomas. The challenges lie in finding better biomarkers of aggressiveness and determining whether control of aggressive melanomas can be influenced by targeted interventions such as early detection, drug interventions, and preventive strategies.

Data mining in clinical big data: the frequently used databases, steps, and methodological models

Wen-Tao Wu et al.

Summary: Many high-quality studies have emerged from public databases, but these data are often underutilized due to their dimensional heterogeneity, timeliness, and irregularity. Data mining technology has shown excellent performance in evaluating patient risks and building disease prediction models, especially in large-scale medical public databases. This article introduces main medical public databases, describes data mining steps, tasks, models, methods, and applications, aiming to help clinical researchers understand the application of data mining technology in clinical big data and produce research results beneficial to doctors and patients.

Racial Disparities in Patients with Melanoma: A Multivariate Survival Analysis

Joshua Brady et al.

Summary: In a study of melanoma patients in Wayne County, Michigan, it was found that non-Hispanic black patients had significantly higher melanoma-specific death rates compared to their non-Hispanic white counterparts. However, after adjusting for stage, age, and sex, there was no increased risk of death due to melanoma in non-Hispanic black patients. The increased incidence of melanoma mortality in non-Hispanic black patients is likely due to late-stage diagnosis.
