Chemical Storage of Ammonia through Dynamic Structural Transformation of a Hybrid Perovskite Compound

Jyorthana Rajappa Muralidhar et al.

Summary: We report an organic-inorganic halide perovskite compound that can chemically store ammonia through dynamic structural transformation. This compound undergoes a chemical structure change from a one-dimensional columnar structure to a two-dimensional layered structure upon NH3 uptake through addition reaction. The estimated NH3 uptake is 10.2 mmol g(-1) at 1 bar and 25℃. NH3 extraction can be performed by a condensation reaction at 50℃ under vacuum. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that reversible NH3 uptake/extraction originates from a cation/anion exchange reaction. These findings demonstrate the potential of integrating efficient uptake and extraction in a hybrid perovskite compound through chemical reaction, paving the way for further exploration of dynamic and reversible compounds for chemical storage of NH3.

Homomeric chains of intermolecular bonds scaffold octahedral germanium perovskites

Amin Morteza Najarian et al.

Summary: In this study, an organic scaffold was used to influence the geometric arrangement and electronic configuration of perovskite structures, resulting in the suppression of lone pair expression and templating symmetric octahedra. This design principle was extended to copper perovskite and quasi-two-dimensional systems. The resulting perovskite photodiodes exhibit improved performance compared to non-octahedral and lead analogues.

Halogen Bonding in Perovskite Solar Cells: A New Tool for Improving Solar Energy Conversion

Pierangelo Metrangolo et al.

Summary: Hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskites have emerged as promising materials for next-generation solar cells due to their easy and low-cost production and unique optoelectronic properties. However, their practical implementation is hindered by their poor stability in air and moisture. Optimizing the chemical composition and exploiting non-covalent interactions can enhance the efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells.

The Emerging Role of Halogen Bonding in Hybrid Perovskite Photovoltaics

Melissa L. Ball et al.

Summary: The ongoing effort to stabilize hybrid perovskite solar cells and enhance their performance has led to the exploration of various strategies. One such strategy focuses on the use of molecular modulators that engage in halogen bonding, a unique noncovalent interaction. Halogen bonding has been found to improve perovskite assembly, stability, defect passivation, and interfacial energetics, resulting in superior mechanical properties and improved device performance. However, future advancements will require further understanding of halogen bonding nature and rigorous structural assessments. This article provides a critical overview of recent developments in the use of halogen bonding agents in hybrid perovskite photovoltaics and discusses their potential utility in the future.

Highly Emissive Quasi-2D Perovskites Enabled by a Multifunctional Molecule for Bright Light-Emitting Diodes

Dongyang Shen et al.

Summary: In this study, a multifunctional molecule, tetrabutylammonium dihydrogen phosphate (TDP), was introduced to enhance the emission efficiency of quasi-2D perovskite. TDP effectively suppressed low-order phases, passivated defects, and increased the exciton binding energy of the perovskite, resulting in improved radiative recombination and high emission efficiency. The TDP-incorporated perovskite films exhibited significantly higher photoluminescence quantum yield, external quantum efficiency, and brightness.

Tuning the Circular Dichroism and Circular Polarized Luminescence Intensities of Chiral 2D Hybrid Organic-Inorganic Perovskites through Halogenation of the Organic Ions

Summary: This study investigates the effects of various halogen-substituted chiral organic cations on the chiroptical properties of hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs). It was found that the HOIP with a chlorine-substituted chiral cation exhibits the highest circular dichroism (CD) and circular polarized luminescence (CPL) intensities, which can be correlated to the modulation of magnetic transition dipole and halogen-halogen interaction between organic cations and inorganic sheets.

Structural descriptor for enhanced spin-splitting in 2D hybrid perovskites

Manoj K. Jana et al.

Summary: A specific bond angle disparity connected with asymmetric tilting distortions of metal halide octahedra correlates with the computed spin-splitting in 2D hybrid perovskites. This distortion metric can serve as a crystallographic descriptor for rapidly discovering potential candidate materials with strong spin-splitting. Local inorganic layer distortions induced via appropriate organic cations provide a key design objective to achieve strong spin-splitting in perovskites.
